Hi folks, I'm a new member on the board... I only got into magic a few months ago but I've already become quite obsessed with card magic and hand slights. I am a musician and high school drama teacher by trade ( in Vancouver BC) I am married to the world’s greatest woman and have the two world’s greatest boys (3yrs and 6months). I have always loved performing in all genres and am totally psyched to try my "hand" at card magic. I have a small collection of DVDS and lots of instant downloads purchased from penguin magic... The only thing that bums me out is the lack of a good magic store in Vancouver... there is only one small one that I know of (on Granville island 'clowning around') so if there are any other folks from lotus land perhaps you could let me know of any other good shops in town. I don't mind buying off the internet for some things, but for others I would like to see them before I buy. I hope to eventually gain access to the restricted area of this board as I am very serious about my commitment to magic, and am in desperate need of help for many of my slights and moves.... I’ve checked out lots of the videos of you folks showing your talent and I am really impressed at how great so many of you are… thanks for reading and I hope to chat with lots of you soon.

Hi and welcome to TM

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Welcome aboard,

Nice introduciton good to see a new injection of entusiasm :D

I am sure your background as a drama teacher will serve you greatly in magic. Soon you will realise (hopefully  ) that it is the performance of an effect that makes it magical rather than the workings/effect itself.

There is a premis in magic to try and consider yourself an actor playing the part of a magician, that should be no trouble for you.

Do not worry about purchasing magic online use the reviews to search for reliable dealers. As for individual effects it is part of the process to buy tihngs at first that wont be suitable for you. But this is part of the learning curve.

Dont be shy to ask questions about questions about paticular products so we can help you decide if they will be suitable for your perfomance needs/ venue ect.

To begin with if i could recomend one thing, and one thing only. It would be Mark Wilsons: Complete course in magic. It will teach you so much about many areas of magic. And is an absolute bargain i think it will cost you about $25. Truthfully you may not need to buy anything further (ever!), but i assure you you will 8)

Hope that helps

Welcome.

As Keymaster says above, a background in dramam is a HUGE advantage. More than you'll realise for a long time!!

As well, being a musician is another HUGE advantage. Practise your sleights like you practise your instrument and you'll be well ahead of the field.

And when you become famous don't forget your TM friends..... :D

hey hey welcome to TM
you know its funny i was JUST going through my magic stuff looking for the Clowning Around business card to find their number...saw the website on the card and googled it and it led me here to this website and to your post.
I also live in Vancouver and sadly there used to be a Gizmoz store at Metrotown Mall but they closed down.
me being a passionate about drama as well as magic can reassure you that you have picked the perfect match as far as you can say about two arts coming togather. reminds me of all the rehearsals day after day and when its showtime we would have a full house of new audience all with different reactions.
but yah im getting off topic. i do a lot of magic in Vancouver so hopefully i'll meet you soon :)
