In "Blood on the Tricks" Curzon recommends making a double thickness card (glueing two cards together) and - I think - this goes under both cards to be lifted - apparently makes it a lot easier and you can do all the normals stuff with pack, because presumably if you've got two cards you want to keep on top you'll be controlling the top stock and a 3rd won't matter.
But really - practice practice! Train journeys, boring lectures, any time...!
