What are some of the:

1. Books
2. DVDs
3. Tricks

that you think every person interested or already dabbles in magic should own? This includes beginner, intermediate, and expert levels. Try and include a reason behind your choices. You can include favorites of course.

Can't you just quietly use the search function? There's a billion and one honest reviews here...

In terms of card magic you must (imo) own the Royal Road. Apart from being the foundation for everything else you might ever want to learn it has great tricks in it that get overlooked just because they're in a beginners book.

The only other book I have that I think everyone performing any close-up magic at all should have is the Tannen's Stars of Magic compendium.

Everything else is taste and what suits you, but those two books are so packed with quality that you'd be mad to ignore them.

I've got a lot of DVDs and I think a lot of them are superb, but I wouldn't class any of them as essential. The only seperately sold trick I would recommend to anyone doing magic with cards is Roy Walton's Card Warp.

I've tried searching and honestly this forum has a very bad way of filtering results so you end up with a ton of stuff you're not even looking for...

Anyway this post is unique, because it's not just books, not just videos, and not just tricks. It is a combination of all three and which best fit into the library of any magician.

The instructions for the search function are quite clear. You can use "AND" etc. to filter out unwanted stuff, and narrow it to the reviews section. Yes, you have to do some reading, but nothing worthwhile is ever truly easy ;)

In Google, type:

site:.talkmagic.co.uk

And add "+" or "-" terms to filter your results.

The search function on this forum is not the "very best" if you haven't noticed, it returns a plethora of unrelated results even if you narrow them. This not the only forums I've been apart of, I'm experienced with message boards and know the unwritten rule of not clogging up the boards with already answered questions and to use the search function first, but like I said, the search feature here is far from perfect.

That's ridiculously unnecessary.

I'm not stupid but I also have trouble with the search function sometimes. as for essential books I'd say Royal Road and Bobo. DVDs I'm not sure on but for a single trick you can't go wrong with Crazy Man's Handcuffs. It's probably the best trick I know.

Let's not derail this thread any further about the inadequate search function. Thanks to everyone who posted their choices so far, keep them coming.

No problem. I just have the default attitude that if I give you a fish, you'll eat today. If I teach you to fish, you can feed yourself forever.

Derailing alert:
I think it was Terry Pratchett who said "Give a man a fire and you keep him warm for the night, but set him on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life".
