There are many books and dvd's that teach the pass. For instance, "On the pass" with richard kaufman (i think it is) or you could get any number of books, "Royal Road to card magic" is a good one. I recommend you don't learn that guys pass.

You don't have to use the pass. Any method of controlling the card to the top will do.

The artist who does not rise, descends.

I beleive expert at the card table also teaches a great pass. It also teaches the monte, bottom dealing, false shuffles and cuts, (etc.).

right guys, I'm currently learning the pass, after finding out it is very useful if you don't want to do much shuffling etc in routines.

i have a number of problems tho.

1. sometimes, with the pinky break, the pinky keeps the top card (their card) when i move the rest up. any suggestions???

2. the fingers i use to grip the toppart of the deck often flip the cards over when i try and make the pass. any suggestions???

and in general i can't get the pass. lol.

any help would be greatly appreciated...
thanks a bunch! :)

The best suggestion I can give for learning the pass is to do it as much as possible. It will take months to a year before you have "perfected" the pass. There are many subtle nuances that you just have to get the feel for.

It took me 2 days straight of non-stop trying to even be able to do it if I remember right.

Just play with it, think about why that card is being pulled and what you can do to compensate. Think about why the cards flip and what you can do to compensate. Get a feel for the deck so that doesn't happen. It's part balance, its part moving your fingers in just the right way. Its part alot of things.

Just dont give up!

Hmm, practice is golden, however I think he might need some more directed advice on this one.

First of all, you say that your pinky is holding back a card while executing the pass. This is because while you're doing the pass, you're not lifting the top packet off of the bottom one, you're simply sliding it, causing your pinkie to scrape the bottom card. While it's definitely not a hinge motion, you should still separate the two packs before moving.

Concerning why the top packet flips, I've been sitting here with a pack of cards for 5 minutes and I still can't even fathom how that's happening

A video would really help

On the pass with Richard Kaufman

Really about time I learnt this move myself, I find the pics & desciption in card college unhelpful & am wondering if anyone can recommend any video or book that goes into great detail.
I have a ton of magic DVDs & some have been knocking around for eons so I can't remember if any off them deal with the pass i.e. I have loads of Jay Sankey but I don't recall him ever actually teaching the pass, mind you good as he is I find his teaching methods rather rushed anyway!

Oh I'll check out Born To Perform again, that is a great video, dunno if Oz deals with the pass, so I might have answered my own question but hey, any over links appreciated by me & no doubt others.

Yes he does, but pretty quick. He said that it's better to buy another dvd to learn the pass. He just explained the basic sleight but nothing more.

That is a really bad site, I don't know about the copyright issues but they've got some stuff with Oz Pearlman explaining the classic force which is either from Penguin Magic or his Born To Perform DVD.
Grr I hate that all this stuff is so publicly available. Why would Dergen Brown want to explain the pass on a site where anybody can access it.

We spend millions on this & spend vast amounts of time practising & then someone can just come out & say, you classic forced me.

Anyway thanks for the link & trying to help me out Mikey 666, just don't like the availability of this stuff
