From Hell

Yes, I was thinking more like 20 or 30, so you could spend more time on drama and less on going through 52 cards.

My version of from Hell was made on red Waddingtons so looks the part.

The only downside was the curly nature of the cards, hard to shuffle.
I have not used this effect in anger yet even thought I purchased it about 1 year ago, I think that says something.

Update on version 3:

Got an email from Dan today...

From Hell V3 will be released mid November.

Customer feedback regarding From Hell has always been fantastic but I am always open to constructive criticism. Two areas that seemed a popular gripe was the card size (they should be larger) and the amount of cards (there should be less). So here it is; the tweaked and definitive version of From Hell.

The pack now comprises of 25 larger cards. The photographs are set on exact reproductions of Victorian mounting cards which are dated 1888 and marked ‘Under Instruction of the Metropolitan Police – London ’. Each photograph has been developed by Kodak on matt photographic paper; this edition really is the ultimate in quality and authenticity and will last a lifetime. As with all previous versions of this legendary effect the cards are wrapped in a blood stained rag and bound with a ribbon taken from the hair of one of the Ripper’s victims.

I have "From Hell" version 2 and can say it's tremendous. (And if you don't want to use all 52 pictures, you can always use fewer.) I do intend to re-invest in version 3, but haven't got round to it yet.

Just like everything from Lebanon Circle, the cards are painstakingly handmade, so all the blood spatters, dribbles, etc. are clearly real and not just printed -- on the wrapping cloth as well as on the cards. I had a slight problem with a small stray blood drip on one of the "innocent" cards; I'm sure Dan would have replaced the picture if asked, but I just erased it with a little bleach on a paintbrush, no harm done. (He commented that his workshop resembles the aftermath of a massacre. These things happen.)

The only minor letdown is the black ribbon used to tie up the bundle, which looks and feels far too modern. It's easy enough to replace it with something more in keeping.

They are indeed real photos of real women who are all dead by now (given the age of the original portraits). The presentation is intrinsically dark, and can be made darker, depending on the story you choose to tell. You'll need to pick your setting as well as your audience to make the most of the creepiness.

There's an extra touch, if you want to go down the pseudo-psychology route. Dan's added a tiny blood spot (pinpoint-sized) to the face of each "victim" photo, which will go unnoticed unless you point out the specks and call them subliminal cues. This rather spoils the haunted atmosphere, but it's an option if you want to use it.

I've just received V3 and it is incredible. The photos are not just of a high quality, but really look the part, too. I'll write a proper review once I've performed it. I had V2 but sold it recently; V3 is definitely an improvement.

That's why I purchased From Hell shortly after I got White Star; I started thinking about how FH could benefit from WS's method as I'm not too happy with Dan's original method for FH, if the truth be told. It just doesn't feel right to me. However, Dan has included three alternative methods for FH and I love the sound of one of them (it's based on Derren Brown's Undertaker routine and sounds excellent).

I'm a sucker for quality props and From Hell v3 has it in spades. Seriously, anyone interested in this kind of effect should consider getting FH v3. £30 or £20 to owners of previous versions of FH.

But bear in the mind the warning on Dan's website - FH is not for everyone!

I'm highly delighted with v3. Far superior to previous FH's. The handling I would suggest is the "Undertaker" handling. Works perfectly. Rather than "positive" or "negative" I simply ask the spec whether they feel the image shows a victim or not. If done from a platform or in a dinner party setting where there are a few people to go from, I try to get an undertaker (a la DB) or a policeman to be my spec. If none are available I go down the line - "Special constable? No? Ambulaneman? No? Er...traffic warden? Lollipop lady?" This usually gets a larf.

I was just tonight sorting through the cards (there's a certain order I like to have them in) ready for a presentation tomorrow, when the light in the room flickered for a minute or two and then the bulb went pop! I nearly shat meself. It was a long-life enviromentally friendly bulb too. Never had one of them go pop yet. It even let out a whisp of smoke. What a perfect moment.
