Still, 1700 people is still a lot. And they are all the same age as you with similar experiences. Magic can still help as an ice breaker to meet some of them ;)

I didnt have popularity in mind when i decided to start :) but its good to know that it does so well for you folks.

So far today, ive done a lot of work on the card snap change, the card vanish, and the quantum rubber band...

All of them have come a long ways and my card snap change is getting really seamless. :) Now I need to find myself some material to read so i can learn some other tricks to go with stuff like teh card snap change and the card vanish.

If you are heading back to Calgary for a visit anytime soon (maybe xmas) you should check out the Vanishing Rabbit. It is a fantastic magic shop and it is on Centre street, just north of 16th ave......great staff, great supplies, and very helpful. They also have a website, www.vanishingrabbit.com

Check it out and you will find they are very helpful and will get you rolling in the right direction with effects, supplies, and suggestions.

Hi fellow Canadian!

I recommend working on the basics first and at the same time, also learn a few dramatic yet easy to do card tricks in order to practice your presentation. I've always been amazed at how some of the easiest tricks to do have the greatest impact.

The best thing to do is to become very familiar with the feel for holding a deck of cards or a coin. Have you learned how to do a classic palm yet? It's not something you can do overnight but it's very helpful. When I was working on that one, I would have a coin in my palm virtually all day (still do fairly often). You can literally practice while walking down the street or sitting on the subway or while writing notes in class. In fact, one of the best times for practicing coin tricks (once you get good enough not to drop it every time) is in lectures! I've gotten my share of odd looks from professors. :)

I recommend Bobo's Modern Coin Magic to get you started. Once you can do a few palms and knuckle walking, the sleights started coming along a lot faster.

The same thing with cards. I actually haven't read very many books on card magic, I mainly picked up a deck of cards and just started playing around with it. Practice one handed cuts while watching TV and just keep moving the cards around. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will feel with them and the tricks will evolve from that.

It would be nice to have a mentor. I haven't had much luck with that myself but I met one magician awhile back and I learned more from him in two hours than I had done in the previous few months!

Enjoy!

I think Jenny and other Toronto magicians may be interested in the Anniversary Party at the Browser's Den of Magic. It usually runs all day and is on Sunday November 19th. Call Jeff at 416-927-7446 for details. Tell him Mark Lewis sent you.

Here is some information:

Come Celebrate Our 31st Anniversary!

Sunday, November 19, 2006
From 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Cake! Pop! Coffee! Sandwiches!
Discounts! Magic Trivia Contest & Prizes! Magic Auction!
Len Cooper Memorial Award!

Dear Friends,You are invited to celebrate the beginning of our 32nd year in business! We could not have done it without YOU!10:00 AM to 12:00 PM: Magic Auction - We will be auctioning off items to the highest bidder; these will be store items and items from a recent collection.12:00 to 4:00 PM: We will be serving sandwiches for you to make magically disappear by your favorite method. Of course we will be demonstrating some of the new magic tricks and props that have arrived. EVERYONE IN ATTENDANCE WILL PICK A CARD FROM A DECK AND ON THAT CARD WILL BE A NUMBER. THAT NUMBER CAN BE USED FOR A DISCOUNT ON ANY PURCHASES YOU MAKE DURING THE DAY (NON-AUCTION ITEMS). THE DISCOUNTS WILL RANGE FROM 10% TO 20%! A small token of appreciation for your dedication to Browser’s Den.

4:00 PM: As many of you know our founder Mr. Len Cooper passed away January 2003. We all still miss him greatly and to honor Len’s memory a memorial fund has been formed in his honor. Every year we will be giving away a full set of ‘TARBELL COURSE IN MAGIC’. This memorial fund is a joint fund between Browser’s Den and Len Cooper’s family. Bernice Cooper, Len’s wife, and able assistant for twenty years at the shop will be presenting the award to the young person whom we feel takes magic seriously and has the potential to contribute to the world of magic.4:15 PM: Magic Trivia Contest-We will ask 7 different magic trivia questions and the first person to yell out the correct answer will win a nice prize…7 prizes will be given out in total! And after the contest it will be time for the most important part of the day… BIRTHDAY CAKE!!We hope that all of you can make it. There are no fees to attend. Admission to the Auction is free! And the food and refreshments are free!! And the fun is free!!

We would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of you for your continued patronage. With the Internet these days many magic shops that have real storefronts are finding it difficult to compete. We appreciate you, our loyal customers who keep coming back!

Magically the Browser’s Den Team

Shawna, John & Jeff

Jeff suggested that Jenny should also visit the Browser's Den on a weekday for better service since the shop will be packed to the rafters on the anniversary party. During the week he will have more time to advise her on magical matters.

Toronto is very lucky. It has two well stocked magic shops. UK magicians would find the prices very low in comparison to British dealers simply because of the exchange rate. I have no idea what the websites are and I can't be bothered looking. Morrissey Magic and the Browser's Den are the names of the dealers if any of you wish to do a search. It might be worth ordering from them by mail. I do know that mail service to the UK is remarkably quick.
