Hi fellow Canadian!
I recommend working on the basics first and at the same time, also learn a few dramatic yet easy to do card tricks in order to practice your presentation. I've always been amazed at how some of the easiest tricks to do have the greatest impact.
The best thing to do is to become very familiar with the feel for holding a deck of cards or a coin. Have you learned how to do a classic palm yet? It's not something you can do overnight but it's very helpful. When I was working on that one, I would have a coin in my palm virtually all day (still do fairly often). You can literally practice while walking down the street or sitting on the subway or while writing notes in class. In fact, one of the best times for practicing coin tricks (once you get good enough not to drop it every time) is in lectures! I've gotten my share of odd looks from professors.
I recommend Bobo's Modern Coin Magic to get you started. Once you can do a few palms and knuckle walking, the sleights started coming along a lot faster.
The same thing with cards. I actually haven't read very many books on card magic, I mainly picked up a deck of cards and just started playing around with it. Practice one handed cuts while watching TV and just keep moving the cards around. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will feel with them and the tricks will evolve from that.
It would be nice to have a mentor. I haven't had much luck with that myself but I met one magician awhile back and I learned more from him in two hours than I had done in the previous few months!
Enjoy!
