New Gimmick - questions

Postby Bumacus » Nov 19th, '06, 18:02

Thinking about selling a new gimmick which works very well in my routine. It's not a spin-off of any other trick (cant find anything like it) but has distant sililarity to other effects. Just looking for a few suggetions.

Price - was thinking about $15-20 including p+p??? too cheap or just right??

Instructions - Written, pdf or Dvd???

What to include?? It does need other things to make it work but all magicians should have them.

Thinking of making a video to put on youtube. Anyother forms of advertising???

This sounding resonable??

I think it all depends on the cost to you to make the gimmick and the market size you expect. do you want to make it the next D'Lite or something that only a lucky few can get access to?

Most TTs I've come across, for instance, have a simple sheet of paper explaining what they do, so unless it's revolutionary and has a thousand uses, I'd stick to paper.

It's kinda hard to judge something's worth when you don't know what it is :?.

With instructions, it depends on how much technical explanation there is and how well you can put that into words.

the price will depend on the trick(s) the gimmick does

i suggest making written instructions on how to wear/use the gimmick then sell a DVD separate with multiple routines and maybe a bonus effect with the gimmick.

lastly please post a video of yourself using the gimmick or post what the gimmick can do

EDIT: also include all things nessacery to use the gimmick but not things for specific tricks (unless you put it in a package and sell it for more money  )

The gimmick can do alot based on the magicans skill. Im still getting used to it because it is hard enough and doesn't just "work". I'm leaning twards written instructions, seems the best idea.

I dont want to give too much away just yet, but it can be incorporated into a good few effects that most magicians do in their rountines anyway. and just adds an extra edge. Its tiny and almost un-noticeable (which is why the p+p is free worldwide)

As for a price tag - is $15-20 resonable?? Beacuse it can do alot but is TINY!!

I'd say make sure you do a very thorough research. If there is a trick out there similar to yours you'll have to consider what they might do if you make a lot of money out of it. Plus, you're credibility would be at stake in the Magic community.

My advise would be to run the idea by other magicians to see if there isn't one like it. Of course, if you're worried that they might steal your idea. You could always send yourself the trick through registered mail. You can keep it sealed until until someone challenges you on the idea. This way, you'll have proof of the date you came up with the idea by a third party.

I'm sure there are creators here who'd be able to give you better advice.

Can you tell us what this gimmick does? Does it vanish a coin? A silk? Some sort of holdout? Does it allow you to make writing appear on your skin or something, I dunno.

I'll help out with anything if you want, I have an inventive mind  Pm me if you wish.

For a reputation, I'd go with Seige or Craig Browning.

You can't copyright an idea! Or a title for that matter.
