Ultimately, I think it all boils down to what's entertaining. If a magician can connect to his or her audience, pique their interest, draw them in to the routine and make them actually care about what's happening, then they're going to get work and a healthy reputation.

If not, they might get by with a few bang-and-you're-done jawdroppers. But if that's all you're relying on, that audience will remember the punchline - not the magician.
