Taking the sticker off card boxes

Postby XTTX » Dec 8th, '06, 05:55

Yes, this may sound like a stupid idea, but what method do you guys use to take off the sticker of a bicycle box (not sure if other companies produce boxes with stickers)? When I take mine off, I usually cut it, then peel the bottom, but I find it leaves the sticky residue behind :?

Just tried the alcohol (rubbing alcohol), ended up with a very soggy, still sticky box.

I'm almost certain you can buy a product called "sticky stuff remover" on the net somewhere. It does what it says on the tin, its excellent stuff.

Thats the link for it above. Its unstuck pretty much everything i can think of for me so far.

Hope that helps

Sam :)

I tend to leave it one there, tear it differently on different deck is a great way to marek the boxes for identification.

Well I know of some stuff called "Goo - Be - Gone", I just don't have any and never have. As for leaving the sticker on, I don't like doing that because of that little half-circle cut on the box which exposes the sticker to the deck possibly making the deck sticky.

Talcum powder.

If you carry several decks, you can identify them in-pocket by carefully peeling the seal from the case and forming a flap. Do this on several and cut it in different ways so that you can locate the one you want without fumbling about.

EDIT: I've just taken delivery 12 bikes from magictricks.co.uk. With a seasonal discount voucher, regular delivery and some stored redemption points, they were only for £13 delivered!!!

Cutting the sticker and leaving it on the box is a lot less trouble.

I carefully peel the sticker off then use light fluid on a rag, not a tissue.

I dont take it off i leave it there i just use a knife and slit each side of the sticker a little bit then just pull the box open with my fingers. I think it looks better and it doesent leave anywhere sticky.

Of course, if you slit the seal and leave the sticky surface showing, you can control a card to the top of the deck, put it away, and have it stay in the case when you next remove the deck.

Mandrake once mentioned this method a couple years ago, and it's the method I've used ever since:

Boil up a kettle, and hold the sealed seal against the hot kettle for a minute or two, heating the glue up. Make sure the whole sticker is warm, then carefully peel it off. Once you've done it two or three times you'll be able to get the seal off quite easily - it's then a case of 'mopping up' the small amount of sticky residue left behind with the sticker you've just pulled off.

Job done. Works every time.

My friend has been telling me about this wholesale warehouse called CostCo (just everyday items) where you can buy a brick of bikes for $14 USD; I'm thinkinga bout getting some this weekend.

Thanks for the info guys about the sticker, it's really annoying me. I'll be sure to try out the steam method or others on the next one I open.

if you dont just tear the sticker off like a ravenous beast, a little dab of lighter fluid on a q-tip or finger (be careful smokers!) will do the job...

you can use lighter fluid to remove stickers off just about anything actually...album covers, books...you get the idea...

oooh and as an aside, did you know hairspray can remove ink from plastic-type things too?

I use a craft knife to open them cleanly and leave the sticker on.
