Apparently crisps were invented when a guy in a restaurant kept sending his chips back saying they were too fat. After a couple of attempts at placating the customer the chef got p*ssed off and cut the potatoes as thin as he could before frying them. Unfortunately for the chef the plan backfired because the guy was delighted with them. This kicked off a craze for ultra thin chips and crisps began their long journey, via maize and through ovens, to their ultimate form of Monster Munch.

About the french drop: in "Modern Coin Magic", J.B. Bobo refers to it as "Le Tourniquet" (literal meaning: the twist).

Very odd how the topic suddenly shifted form a coin slight to a fried food... :D
