Confirmation of possible bad news for coinworkers

Postby Mandrake » Jan 6th, '07, 00:06

There have been rumours for a while but I see from an advert in a current TV listings magazine that in 2008 the designs on UK 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p coins will be changed considerably and permanently - this might cause a few problems for anyone who uses 'special' coins. I'd imagine that the existing designs will be around for quite a while but we'd need to be very careful when borrowing coins from specs as the chances of getting the new designs will increase almost daily as new design coins become more common. Bummer or what?!

Someone will make a mint out of the new coins

Thanks for the heads up Mandrake.

Although it seems to be just a change of the tails side of the 1,2,5,10,20 + 50, and there are already quite a few different designs on the £1 + £2. So I don't think it should cause too much trouble.

There was actually a competition to send in designs, I wonder if they would have accepted different cards on each coin. Card and coin magic could take on a whole new meaning

Thanks Ultimatecreate, any 'trick coins' that show a head side will be fine. Its only the design of the tails side that is changing and they are staying the same size.

That's why I've never bought any "special" coins. They change too often.

Any guesses as to when we'll get lumbered with the Euro?

Thanks for the heads up, Mandrake: from what you have heard so far is it just the pictoral designs or the size and shape of the coins?

(I also wish to say that StevieJ's picture is awesome!)

It's just the design on one side - the last time coins changed sizes ( 5p, 10p and 50p ) the vending machine industry had to re-calibrate a lot of machines!

I wouldn't have thought it'd be too much of a problem just yet as the old coins will still be in circulation for a while yet. Would mean that you'd have to be careful with any switches involving a borrowed coin though

Yeay New coins! I collect new mintings of coins like the new designs of £2 and 50p this is very good news in that respect.

I all so use Half dolers to do magic with because, one they are easyer to palm and they are bigger then uk coins so they can be seen. If I have to I will use 10ps or something, I just perfer using halfs.

I am glad i never got a coin in bottle though but I am sure the old coins will be around for ages, remember how long the two shilling bit was around for after the 10p bit was introduced. Now the old 10p that was a great magic coin..

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.
