Thought I'd wake this topic up a bit some 6 months later.

I want a book test & I want it now!!! But having learnt patience I shall see what is what first...

(by the way) I have the Marc Paul one (superb DVD by the way :-)) which is very good & someone said you can only select one word which isn't true, you can certainly get a few words, depends on your ability  .

I've only been caught on this once, by a friend who just has to figure everything out.

Anyway am considering buying the Dracula booktest but at £39.99 (ebay) am reading up a bit more on book tests in general first. I think Magicseen reviewed this a while back & pointed out that the book can actually be read & if you don't know what your looking for you'll miss it? However having just had a rummage around magic cafe & someone there says it's very easy to figure out :?

Obviously I want the cleanest book test possible. So the spec gets a choice of say 3 books. From that point on I don't touch the book.
They flick through the book & check all is okay.
They flick to a page of their choice, none of this lets' add a number & divide it by two & subtract 5 etc.

So just a wake up on this topic, any great new ones out in the last few months?

I slightly rue the day I decided to sample as many book tests as I could. I was 'spared' a few, by them going out of print, but I own far too many for my health! I must own a couple of dozen marketed effects, plus know methods that can be done on the fly.

The trouble is there are lots of ways to satisfy your criteria. For example, must the choice of book be fair? If not, that opens up many more possibilities.

What sort of price range?

Something that fits your description well is 'Ultimate Flashback', but hey, it's not new, so it must be out of the question, right?

Dr Todd's book is excellent, but I don't think it suits your requirements. Then again, maybe your requirements should change!

Sorry for being so cryptic, but I think this is one of those subjects where you need to go off and do your own research and, sadly, invest a bit of cash.

But, if you don't want to do that...buy 'Ultimate Flashback'. It's a multi-phase routine, with a free choice of book, as you specified, and you are not restricted to only the first word on the page.

EDIT: You might think that 'Final Flashback' would be an improvement, as it came after 'Ultimate'. However, while I like 'Final', I still think 'Ultimate' is better.

Ha, had the same experience only with wallets around a 2 years ago!

OK Price range is anything, but I'll be pi**ed off if I spend £20 + & get something I don't feel comfortable with. My most important criteria is being able to relax while I perform & not having to worry about slipping by any sleights.

I'm pretty comfortable with the magicians choice so no the book doesn't necessarily have to be a fair choice.

Having just searched on this site for Ultimate Flashback it had some positive comments but no actual review. And having had a wonder again over to MC again no review, but a search turned up a ton of other book tests... Sheesh so much to research, this definatly needs several hours of attention lovingly devoted one afternoon next week when I have no work on, the kettle is on constant boil & the coffee is flowing from mah ears :-)

Thanks for your detailed reply Part Timer & ...

The Hoy Test is easy, very entertaining and can be impromptu. I learn this from Richard Osterlind's MM series.

Anyone reading this know which DVD no. this is on?

I would disagree with the comments you saw at the cafe in regards to the Dracula book test. Bear in mind that the average spectator will do as instructed and little to no more. They are allowed to examine the book. They won't go over it with a fine tooth comb - and the simple fact that you can hand them the book, walk away, and let them skim through it makes everything seem completely fair. Even a spectator who "snoops" will be hard-pressed to discover anything. Bear in mind, while the book CAN be read - your spectator should actually do so. Like most successful book tests, the book becomes secondary to the effect itself. Treated as such, Dracula won't fail you.

Going by the criteria you are asking for, I'd say the following book tests would work very well:

Dracula (all of the books from Alexander Black and Troy Cherry are excellent).
Hoy - It's bold and beautiful
Josh Zandman's IBT is an excellent choice, as well. Easy to learn and lets you focus on presentation.
The Outlaw line - If you're willing to put the time in to study it and get everything in order, this is one of the most incredible series of book tests I've ever seen. Once you have the essentials in order, you can really make this a beautiful and haunting presentation.
Richard Osterlind's Seafire Sequence is another great option. The fact that 1 book is selected from a group of 14 is a nice touch.

What an excellent collection for me to rummage through & read up on, thanks.

Looking forward to it, Lazy afternoon next week, billions of windows open, coffee & donuts & then hitting that pay button :-)

After this I want an impressionist pad, but that's another topic...

It's a cracker, too. Full review to follow, as soon as the rush is over and I've had that breakdown I've been promising myself for so long...

If it to either of abraxus or tommo, then you are insulting two members who make some of the most valuable contributions to the forum. I'm hoping that something has been lost in translation here.
Anyway...I thought that the Karl/supermario alter ego game was up! :?
