Practicing with Mirrors...

Postby confuzzled » Jan 17th, '07, 17:28

This may be a stupid question but for those of you who practice in front of mirrors, what kind of set up do you use? I envisage something like:

__
/ \ (top view)
-o-

for table top/close up magic but I can't find mirrors that are joined like that.
At the moment I'm using two small (~30cm) mirrors gaffa taped together.

"Beware of mirrors, mirrors lie" Jeff McBride....

Well thats the best way of practicing in front of a mirror! actually I cant remember where i saw it but it was a small 3 panelled mirror for close up practice so you could see all sides. But invest in a camcorder because cammeras dont blink.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Agree totally, I'm finding a cheapo webcam to be sufficient currently, separates out the doing and the watching, you can then concentrate on your performance and looking for areas to improve in their own right!

Cheers.

I often practice in front of a camera, I find that with a mirror you're getting instant feedback and adjust what you're doing. With a camera you dont get this and the feedback is much more honest.

i know some people may disagree, but my secret weapon when it comes to practicing is my girlfriend, she is a budding magi herself, and also my harshest critic. the amount of time shes said to me "i can see the coin" or " i know its still on the top of the deck" is brutal, but also essential.

get a partner in crime, then you can practice what its all about- misdirection.

My boyfriend is exactly the same, Atomo. Although I do like to get a routine to a good standard before I show him.

Before video cameras were affordable for mere mortals (mid 70's) I used to use a single mirror right in front of me. I would change the angle (sides) after it looked good from the front. The McBride quote is correct, but Lady of Mystery is correct, cameras usually don't give instant feedback. Having grown-up using mirrors I still use them today. I have a camera that I use occasionally, but I like the immediate feedback of the mirror.

One advantage of the instant feedback of the mirror is that you can go over a sleight many times in a row until you can do it without flashing.

I am probably going to buy the close-up mirror linked in a previous post.

I know some dealers sell a mirror set up just like your sketch, but I'm not sure if they are taped together or not

Your local glass merchant would be able to sell you 3 mirrors to tape together and would probably cost less than a tenner

I use mirrors to practice all new effects. Sometimes a full size in the bedroom and other times a small one propped on the table for close up work.

I wouldn't be without them. They teach you all angles and I've performed for many years and never been questioned or caught out.

I practice in front of a camera whilst looking at something else.

hello there confuzzled nice to meet you

I use my Logitech webcam to watch my self practice point the web cam at the angle you want then watch you’re self on your computer screen by changing the angles of your webcam . Or you can use more then one web cam but I think you only can use one for each computer then you got different angles at the same time.
