in short, yes, i performed it (for my, fifth time, i think...) in a pub last night, my left ear is still ringing from the girl's shriek when I 'revealed' her card

its a great routine. my favorite to end with.

You'll always end up successful... it may just not be as direct in some cases which, if you've spent anytime working with this kind of thing, shouldn't be a problem.

Alright, I'm almost to that point in Pure Effect but I'm not gonna skip ahead, there must be outs because I was under the impression that if the force didn't work then the trick was done but I guess not...

well i havnt messed up yet! and for the reactions of the specs, its a winner! best thing is to read Pure effect', and watch Derren's one on Mr Fry a couple of times over.... and you'll pick up everything you need to know.

Hey Everyone, I'm just wondering for those who perform Derren Brown's Smoke regulary or at all what deck do you use...It mentions buying the Mind Power deck. Should I buy this one or is there another deck that will do the trick...PM if you have a solution or just reply here.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread from the depths, but I've been playing around with this Jonathan and Jane Ross trick for a while - merely out of curiosity, as it was such a wonderful effect and seemed totally impossible.

Anyway, without wanting to sound smug in the least (ahem), I think I've hit upon the method. It's sneaky - very, very sneaky, but also rather brilliant. If it's the real explanation, of course. And the amazing part is that ANYONE could perform this with an ordinary deck of cards.

Obviously I can't expose my method, but I'm not above bribery and like chocolate very much.

Unless I'm deluding myself and everyone else has already sussed this...

Cheers,

John

OK I watched the last part of this (missed the beginning). I think a major point to understand in this type of effect is that there exists such things as decks with 51 DF cards plus one single 7 of hearts. The "only" non-trivial problem (besides showmanship) is to force Jane to pick the 7 of hearts. Here I suppose what was shown on TV might differer slightly from exactly what happened in the TV studio. Moderators please delete if you consider my "explanation" exposure. I am not quite sure it is (in the sense that a lay person would understand what I am talking about), but please delete (or move to secret section) if this is too much.

I just watched this Derren Brown effect again on DVD. The seven of hearts is more or less forced. (Choose a colour, choose a suit, choose a number from 1 to 10 but not 3). The deck is not DF, you see front and backs of the cards here and there.

I think this might actually have been a bold presentation of an effect that I bought just a few days ago. I guess I shouldn't name it ?

Try reading Banachek's Psychological Subtleties - many verbal forces are described there, and 7 of H is one of the easiest to do... (especially after he told her not to choose 3).
I came up with an idea of my own with an In. deck. It is not as good as Derren's but the reactions are brilliant! PM if you want to know more :)

I was thinking about this trick a while ago, and came up with a way of doing it, but it is possibly the most ballsy method imaginable. Doesn't mean it's not the right one though...

As I already wrote I also have a method (the one I suggested in the first place was silly, and based on the fact I did not see the full performance). The method require that the 7 of hearts is forced + a good out

Magic is slight of mind!
