The broadcast times will mean that, understandably, kids will watch this, as they do with TrickyMagic or whatever it was called with Stephen Mulhern, so if anyone's doing kid's parties etc, there will be cries of 'I know how you did that'.

When the Beeb did their first Secrets of Magic Programme some 4 years ago ( http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic1632.php ) performers were drummed out of the magic circle as a result of the exposure, even though the methods shown then were specially created. I wonder if we can expect similar expulsions over Sorcerer's Apprentice?

I've said it before and I'll say it again here: this is why we need to strip each trick we do down to its component parts and build it up again into a presentation that's uniquely our own. That way, there's a lot less chance of someone recognising it as being something they've seen exposed on the telly.

I've e-mailed The Magic Circle to indicate this thread to them and ask if they have any thoughts or comments. If anyone else wants to contact them, the e-mail address is davidbeckley@themagiccircle.co.uk.

The Circle would be the best interest group to write a letter of complaint.

"The Sorcerer demonstrates the art of mentalism with a simple trick"

Hmm...

The narrator's also making a bit of a hash of the word "Prediction".

I caught it this evening. What a load of tosh! Cheesey music and poor narrating! The kids are annoying, however I do see one promising pupil, I forget his name but he has a sleightly dark skin colour, almost Indian but not as dark.

As for the exposure, well it is very annoying. Also it serves no purpose in the program whatsoever. The program is not about learning magic tricks, they are simply revealing the secrets because they can. If the exposure was removed, the show would remain much the same since it is really about how well they perform isn't it. The exposure is pointless.

Also I find it a bit odd that untill this week the sorcerees had no interest in magic at all! They just want to be on tv and win the competition it seems.

Other observations: that Joe kid is a right brat! Also the girls are much better than the boys.

I totally agree with Mahoney having watch one and a bit episodes to date. I'm also sure that the Magic Circle will already have their eyes on this program anyway so it will be interesting to see what they make of it.

Part of the problem with these programs is that the leading roles most likely have no say in the scripting and will already be under contract. It's posible that the directors cut and edit so much of the footage to suit their own aims.

Well, they sure didn't get the editing right on the show about the Queen. I also agree with the observation that there is no need for exposure on this programme. It would work just as well without it.

Just noticed that one of the performers adverrtises on this forum....hmm...

The exposure is not necessary at all. Revealing secrets such as these are unfair on people who use magic as their livelihood.
If someone is booked to perform at a kids show and some of the secrets are shown on tv, they'll have to change their program pretty quickly as kids are the first to shout out when they think they know how something is done, particularly if they have seen it on tv or suchlike.

Hopefully, as with all exposure, the actual "secret" will soon be forgotten by the snotty nosed kids who watch the programme. I used to see it all the time when I used to do kids' shows - kids would say "I know how to do that!" I'd ask "Oh, how do I do it then?" and the kids would think and then say "I've forgotten now." One can only hope for the sake of kids' entertainers that the same thing happens here.

This is also another reason why I got out of the kid show circuit. I just don't need the grief. Doing tarot card readings and seance theatre is a lot more civilised. The spirits are easier to handle than most 6 year olds.

To a certain extent, exposure is inevitable when they 'perform' routines badly or don't think things fully through and tip the gaff - leaving the stage with the props gathered in hands but clearly showing a bit of paper dangling from the end of a wand courtesy of IT was one earlier this week. OK, they're youngsters and they're still learning and I'm quite sure most of us have dropped similar clangers in the past but it's still rather worrying for the magicians who reply on performing such routines for their income.

I wouldn't have thought that there would be many magician that rely on magic as their main or significant source of income, who would be performing these type and level of tricks anyway. However, that doesn't necessarily make it acceptable.

On a positive side, it might make some think more about practicing harder to hone their performance before going out.
