Well, I have to disagree with Matt over the unsuitability for walkabout and table hopping... a lot of this stuff can be done in-the-hands.

I also disagree about the use of gimmicks... some of the effects show are dazzling by virtue of the use of gimmicks, and as stated, they reset almost clean, so there's not a problem with using the decks afterwards. Iain covers this well on the DVD.

For my four pennorth, I'd say, if you combine this DVD with James Browns' 'Still Fancy A Pot of Jam', you've got enough material to go out and make a living around bars, restaurants and clubs.

And quite frankly, the reference to 'Blue Peter Mode' is bizarre, as the gimmicks you're required to create at home are not only simple, but they illustrate perfectly how the creative process works—and outline how even with simple household items, a regular deck can take on a whole new life and become something so much more.

hi ian, fancy bumping into you here!
for everyone elses benifit here too is my reply to ian's reply......
Sorry if I spoke out of term
its only my opinion from little old me, in my little magic world...
I am not a full time pro like ian, and I therefore respect everything he has to say
and I have also learnt a lot from the bits and pieces thrown in whilst they are talking about each effect
I only used the blue peter referance, as I think it was actually used in the dvd?
I really liked the Birds of a Triumph effect, but am struggling with the multiple c*ll**g
so ian, all is not lost as I am sure to pre order your next dvd to put me straight on that!
everyone has different preferances to what they perform, so please don't just go on what I say
there are plenty more reveiws around to give you an overall idea of the dvd
I don't expect to use every effect on every dvd I buy, sure if you get one or two things from each book or dvd, then you are on a winner
maybe I have just been lucky recently as the last 2 I bought were james brown's pot of jam, and chris william's bright ideas, of which 90% of each dvd I can see myself using at some point
so please at such a good price, get the dvd anyway and find out for yourselves....
I know I will be getting ian's next release just to help me out crack the fantastic Birds of a Triumph effect alone!
cheers ian
all the best,
matt

What am I laughing at?

Postby Dave Forrest » Apr 3rd, '07, 11:16

Sorry guys - I cannot ever reveal what I was laughing at during the explanation of 'Coin-aggedon'! It's a secret I hold closer to my chest than that of the Svengali Deck! The subject of my 'girly giggling fit' will be taken to the grave I'm afraid!

Of course, I could just have been laughing for no particular reason and am now trying to create some mystery about it. I'll let you all decide!

The main point is that we all had a really great time shooting this DVD and I think it shows! Iain is not only a fine practitioner but he's as charming a chappie as you're ever likely to meet - top geezer!

Also, I just wanted to say that I think this DVD really stands out because the material is genuinely, straight from Iain's professional repertoire. Iain's client list is very impressive (Shell, Sky, ITV, Manchester United etc) and this is the material that keeps him in demand with these clients. I feel it is rare to get a glimpse of what real, award winning pro's are actually performing for their crust these days and here on DVD Iain shows you exactly that. In todays magic market when so much stuff that's released is untested and impractical I for one find this a breath of fresh air!

Anyway, if anyone would like FREE performance and explanation video downloads of 'Monkey Business' by the man himself, Iain Moran, just send me an e-mail at dave@full52.com. This footage is NOT included on the DVD but the effect is ROCKIN'!

Cheers guys,

Dave.

Mine should be arriving in the post today or tomorrow hopefully. I can't wait to get it and start practising. It does look very fresh and original.

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Great review Seige, I was contemplating this one after seeing the trailer and now I know what's on it, it's definitley one to add to my collection.

Are the gimmicks that hard to make? I am not a very arts and craft type person and got stung once with a bad trick that required you to be Tony Hart, are they simple to make?

My DVD arrived last night and all I can say is, wow. There are some belter effects here. I can't really add much more to what Siege has already said in his review.

But I'll say that I love Iain's style and patter, he's not over dramatic in personality but all his effects pack a punch even after you think the trick is over. A great example is the demo of triumphant, which also has a very clever gimmick thats not hard to make, it could be a great trick to open with as it easily finishes clean. All the skills needed for these gimmicks, you'll have been doing since primary school.

My two main concerns about this DVD were the gimmicks and the difficulty. But the gimmicks are easy to make and have explanations how to finish clean with them, with some clever tips of were to store them etc. Also the tricks are hard to do but as long as you have a good grasp of sleights you should be able to get started on some effect right away.

There are a few I'll be able to get stuck into straight away and can't wait to sit down tonight with a deck of cards and go through the DVD a bit more thorough.

Oh and two more things- what was everyone laughing at, at the end and where can I go to find out more about culling?

I actually had a painting which I did appear on Tony's 'Gallery' when I was seven! It was a clown, juggling balls, with card suits on them!

Anyhow...

The gimmicks are a doddle to make. And educational too...

There is ONE tricky item which could cost you the price of the DVD alone, but that's for the coin trick.

Right, I think I'll be ordering this DVD shortly.

BBM emailed me the performance and explanation of Monkey Business recently. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much as these "free" tricks are usually a waste of time. I could not have been more wrong - Monkey Business is a superb trick. I like Iain's style and looking forward to watching Covert Magic.
