What is your favourite trick and why ?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

such an Illusion should not be done for the money but instead, for the art.

A lovely thought but whoever achieved this feat would be basked in fame and fortune so one kind of goes with the other

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

In Penn and Teller's Magical Mystery Tour, whilst in India they "did" the Indian rope trick. Of course they actually didn't, they just got a bunch of locals to tell some tourists that they'd just seen it done, and the tourists had been that little bit too late to see it, but it had been caught on film etc. The effect was that these tourists would then go away practically convinced they'd seen it done. Ah the power of suggestion.

Obviously this is nowhere near as impressive as doing this (seemingly) impossible trick, but it's an interesting example of how magic changes and grows once the trick is finished, because peoples accounts of it change and exaggerate details.

Favourite trick of the moment: 2 card monte.

I have to say that, If my wife would let me (and that Sir, shall be my excuse) i believe that with sufficient time and expense, I could create (or at least design) this illusion.

I have looked at this effect for many years, and believe that half of it has always been relatively straight forward, that just the final part is tricky. That part has had me thinking for some time.. and not without mental sucess, which afterall, is only what Einstein worked with.

I'd be interested to know if there is still such a wager, and if so, what the rules are.

My first trick was the jumping gemini. "sigh" it always gets my friends and family and they are always nudging me on how to do it. the 2 card monte is very fun ecspecially if you get the distraction right but from past interaction i suggest not more thne 1 person around :P

My Favourite trick is probably 2 card monte becuase it just freaks so many people out. sometimes the reveal gets cut short because people look at the card when they only have one ace. It annoys me because i've already done the switch and thats the hardest part. I ask them what card they think they have and they look at it. next time ill have to say don't look at it ot emphasise the think part. anyways my favourite trick 2 card monte.

A very warm welcome to TM, Deceiver; great to have you on-board.

What you seem to be describing with your 'cut-short' issue is really nothing more than an audience management issue, which you should be able to resolve with directing your specs a little more forcefully.

An instruction, along the lines of, "please - make sure you hold these cards so I can't possibly see them myself" will result in them ensuring they they, themselves don't turn them face-upwards until actually INSTRUCTED to.

I'm sure a little more practise will be all you'll need to get this aspect down 100% :D

My favourites at the moment, because they can be performed anywhere, any time with no probs and they enhance what my show is all about is Einstein's Demise (Chuck Hickok) and a full deck memory routine.

My favourite gimmick in a show is Equinox - super clean and sooo much fun.

Jay Sankey's Divided Attention (mentioned earlier) always gets a huge reaction too when played right.

And, of course, Blindsight by Devin Knight.

If this is a question regarding a trick I like to see myself perform over and over and over again, it would be "Stretch" by Paul Harris. I do that when I'm bored.

I mean over and over.

I even actually upgraded the trick so I could make a reset infront of people. So it would be like pulling out cards one by one.

EDIT: I have always been a young "mentalist" and only held cards and coins a few years ago. The tricks I am more attuned to are the classic 7 Keys to Baldplate and the Lottery.

John Scarne's cutting the aces is my favourite at the moment, I saw it performed for the first time recently and it completely blew me away. Its one of the few non gimmicked card routeins that can baffle even the most experienced magicians (my self included). I LOVE IT!
