David Blaine's "Healed and Sealed" soda can

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

You should probably read some of Seige's 2000+ posts before making statements like that, my friend.

A bit of courtesy and homework before you make yourself look stupid with sweeping statements will do you no end of good.

Also, as being discussed on some other threads, have a read of Derren Brown's 'Absolute Magic' or Henning Nelms' 'Magic and Showmanship,' and you'll discover that spectators do not actually want to be shocked. It's much more sophisticated than that.

i think theres a major problem with the healed & sealed, as in the instructions it reccommends (cant spell) handing the finished can for inspection----but i reccommend (cant spell again) NOOO! As it is examinable from the outside but when they look in the top [edited] There is a tell which spoils the whole trick!

In my limited experience, if you are careful in you placement of certain tell tale signs, then you don't need to be afraid to hand it out.

By way of reply given my lack of courtesy & stupidity..

Dear Zack (& Seige),

If you re-read my emails, they are relatively lighthearted and I offer no offence to any other person posting on the thread.
However, Zack says I am "discourteous & stupid" and Siege manages to discern that I must be an "un-imaginative performer"?
Interesting.
This is where these web based discussion seem to fall down....voice any forthright opinions (about the content not about other members) and the "old guard" lauch a personal attack.

Seige - fine maybe you are gloriously imaginative and I am grossly un-imaginative. But I am guessing the truth is a little less cut & dried.
Zack - You don't know the 1st thing about me or any effect I perform, nor at what level I do so. You are very clearly guilty of making assumptions - the thing you accuse me of?
For starters, I have read Absolute Magic and would also consider that the content of this, however interesting, does NOT constitute a major re-think. We are all on well trodden ground - my initial point.

If you want to believe that you are cutting a new path and are at the vanguard of a new dawn of fresh magic, great, but I seriously doubt it. Not because I am a rude obnoxious upstart showing insufficient respect to the chat room "seniors", but because I am interested in having an honest debate.

Bk x

I don't want to upset anyone here (why do we always say something likje this when we think that we are going to eh?) but Bisonkid, the "Old Guard" and "Forum Seniors" you mention have spent years on this forum getting on very well with the vast majority of members and yet within 5 posts of your arrival here you have managed to take and give offence where I am sure none was meant. Perhaps it is yourself rather than others who should consider revising the style of submitting your forthright opinions to take account of the fact that others may have different opinions.

And to clarify, Seige never said that you were an unimaginative performer, only that your statement indicated that you might be only a perfromer rather than an imaginative magician. This is not in any way derogatory since it is on the subject of magical performers that this post was progressing and discussing the differences between such and those performers who feel that themselves and their audiences would benefit from performing only effects that they have devised themselves rather than those they have taken straight from a book.

However, I can't argue that Zack didn't state that you made yourself look stupid!

Kati, mate... I don't want to spoil your fun, but I think your 'grammar' posts might have an impact on the forum in more ways than one.

Sure, it's been amusing to see your 'corrections,' but have you considered that the original Poster might find it rude? Especially in this case where Lamentz has offered genuine help and advice.

Also, and the mods are more informed than me on this, doesn't each post take up a certain amount of space somewhere; on a central server or something? If it does, I'm sure that the space comes at a certain price. Your post above doesn't really help, amuse or enhance anybody's life, in fact, it creates a bit of a distraction. It isn't really 'money well spent' for the forum.

Do you see what I mean?

Please don't read this as 'having a go' or whatever, I just don't want anyone to be put off by your remarks, or for you to waste your time on posts that people don't really find that informative.

Zack,

I take your point feller, but I also believe in standards. Without wishing to be rude to anyone, folk posting can get into bad habits and end up posting a message in phone txt jargon which is totally alien to me :?

Also, folk can rush their posts and miss grammar, capitalisation etc and being an old gimmer, I prefer to see it right where possible.

Administrators, I take Zack's point but we all have different views. Its your forum and I'm happy to stick with your preferences.

speaking as a lazy disbraxic and generaly mad fellow i can say that the admin have been looking into this situation and are seeing if its possible to add a spellchecker to the froum which should help us all.
i also find that the emoticons help get my point across when thae wording fails me.

i supose i should say something about this topic so here goes:-
though i don't actualy have this effect i know a lot of people that do and it would apear that preperation is the key factor working out the best placments for the key ingredients that make the trick work to make it as examinable as possible, then working on the presentation to distract from any indication points.

also remember that an audience dosn't know what to look for and will easily take things on face value, i had the same misgivings about the scotch and soda finale because of the slight diferences that apeared to me as glaring errors but iv'e never had any questions in over five years so have learned to live with it.

I'm very sorry about this...I do it as a joke but also to remind other posters here that I (can't speak for "we" here...) prefer English over txtspeak.

I hadn't really thought about the consequences ...

I do agree on the topic of 'txtspk.' It's sometimes infuriating to navigate a journey through a post of abbreviations and slang terms on the forum.

However, if you re-read Lamentz' post above, you'll see that there is no 'txtspk' and only a couple spelling errors - I'd go as far as saying they are typos rather than errors, and therefore need no correcting.

Occasionally, yes, a nudge in the right direction as far as posting goes is necessary, but maybe it should be left to the moderators on the site to pick and choose when it is right to do so.
