The Knights Tour

Postby ziggy » May 18th, '07, 15:10

Hi, over the next few months im hoping to get together a short film of me doing some street magic, ive just started venturing into mentalism, and was thinking of doing the Knights tour on a giant outdoor chess board, ive memorosed it so dont need to read from a card, also was thinking of adding a sealed envelope prediction of the square no where the knight will finish, and an inpromptu blindfolding from a spectator, was just wondering how effective people would feel this would be, also anything i could add etc, cheers

I really think that would be a superb effect for a video. Good luck trying to find a giant chessboard outside, though  .

Actually, now that I think of it, if you could find a giant plaza or fountain area, a lot of those places are tiled with black and white square tiles.

'The Range' store sells a complete outdoor chess set if you want to get one yourself and control the film set.

That sounds like a great idea! I imagine it would play better in certain areas - so choose your venue carefully.

A blindfold and prediction kicker would be great touches - I wish I could watch you perform this one!

hi I also do the knights tour, quick questions, have you memorised the sequence in the 13 steps? and have you increased the amazing memory to 64+ ? If so PM and I will give you my routine / tell you of the problems I have come across.
Fantastic idea of filming on a giant chess board, like it a lot. 8)

Knights Tour

Postby Allen Tipton » May 21st, '07, 11:41

:) Peter Reveen performed the Knights Tour in his big Illusions Show for a number of years, using a really large board, which in the pic i saw looked about 9 foot by 9 foot. Could have been larger. It was most impressive. I've recommended it in my current Abra series on Stage Illusions.
Robert Harbin thought enough of it to include it in his rare book, Magic Of Harbin which contains a pic of him using a large board with the numbers painted on and a subtle way of coping the sequence.
There is also 5 pages on its method and performance in The Mind & Magic Of David Berglas.
Finally it is in Corinda's 13 Steps, Step 3, pages 67/68 and a small note about it in Step 5, page 141

That sounds like a fantastic idea and would look a great effect on video. I was just about to suggest the chess board you mentioned yourself in leeds, but you were one step ahead of me obviously

In Paul Daniels' Adult Magic book there's an excellent descrition of the way he did it as well as a second route just in case you're doing it for an audience who may have seen and perhaps remembered the first route.

I was just wondering, what are you going to use for the knight? Are you going to use yourself, a spectator, or perhaps get a giant replica of a knight?

The bar near to the chessboards have sets of giant pieces that you can use for a deposit, although on a sunny day theres always people playing and a decent sized crowd of 15-20+people, although i like the idea of using a spectator....

Probably not feasible but how about a large chessboard made out of black and white tissue paper on a frame, held vertically by lovely assitants and you just punch your way through each square as you come to it? Could be quite spectacular as long as you don’t make a mistake and need to track back a move or two!
