Such an active thread so I apologize in advance if this all of this has already been stated..
1. If the effect is of bad quality or the instructions are bad, return it, any magic shop that is worth its weight will stand behind the products they sell. However if its a case where you are just disapointed in method then sorry, try taking up piano, magic probably is not for you. I cannot tell you how many times I've stood behind the magic store counter performed an effect for somebody, watched their jaw drop, they spend the money, come back two days later whining that it won't fool anybody. When demonstrating (I always used the method and the patter that came with the effect becasue that is what I am selling) My reply, well it fooled the hell out of you so I'm unsure what the problem is. (I darn well knew the problem, they refused to put the work into it, or once again it wasn't really magic it was a trick and sadly it wasn't going to be THE TRICK that makes them world famous).
2. Be honest with your magic dealer. Tell them what skill level you are at. Then if he sells you something beyond what you could possibly handle then shame on him and get your money back. Unless of course you are forwarned that its going to be too difficult and you insisted on purchasing the item anyway.
3. Make sure you tell your magic dealer what type of magic you use and enjoy and your venues. That way he/she will know if a trick is good for you of course. If you say I absolutly will not use thread, and you ask about an effect and it uses thread and he sells it to you, again shame on him and get your money back. If you tell your magic dealer that you do walk around magic and angles are a problelem and he then turns around and convinces you on a trick and it turns out to be angly then call up and yell! At the very least find another magic dealer.
4. Of course this means not just ordering off the web, you will have to call and talk to the dealer, create a relationship.
5. I too have purchased a boat load of c*** (not the best) and have been fustrated, only to go watch somebody else do the same darn thing and make it look brilliant.
If you play the piano and sound crappy on a yamaha purchasing a steinway is not going to make you sound much better.
If your response to this is that the magic shops you are dealing with would never offer that kind of service my response is, 'have you tried?' no they won't give away the secret, but they are people who are not really interested in ripping you off, (well not all) and really it is such a narrow business that decent magic shops really want repeat and loyal customers and there is only one way to do that, customer service.
Sorry if this is long or offensive I don't mean to be and I sympathize with the fustration at the constant let down when something is not as expected. And seriously if you are not happy with the service you are getting let the dealer know, and if it is not resolved find another magic dealer. I could go on, and I can already hear the rebuttles coming in, so fire away. Perhaps I might even respond.
