Top Change

I feel that I am making too much noise with my top change. Anybody have any tips about how to reduce this or am I just back to practice, practice practice?

Thanks

Whose method are you employing? I lost a lot of sound using the one from Expert Card Technique and by using a lighter touch. Also, I push out a lot further than advised and at an angle, so the crossover is smaller. Also, also, pay attention to the direction in which the pack hand is moving.

Someone else will either say "cough" or "don't worry about it" though :)

Yeah I found that if I push the card further and use my left hand more during the exchange. Things got quieter

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

I don't tend to worry about the sound it makes. I've usually got my patter and misdirection in full flow when I do the move so no one ever notices.

love this move. dont worry about the noise - when you are in full flow, nobody notices. hell, iv even performed a top change with the deck about a foot away from the card, and moving my hand over. as long as you get your timing right, it doesn't matter.

love this move - *very* versatile :D

If it's executed at the right time, on an offbeat, then it's almost always covered by the specs reactions. Unless you've just completely dumfounded them.

If you're talking to the spectators and looking at them in the eyes, there shouldn't be much, if any, notice of the sound. That's the one advantage of practicing magic alone, it's so hard to gauge an audience's reaction until you actually do it.

I believe the most important tip mentionned in various books/DVD's is that the right hand must remain (as much as possible) in the same position and it is the left hand that moves away with the rest of the deck to point outwards. This, coupled with the angles (keep your specs to your front-left) works wonders, in spite of the noise.

One thing I have to say about this move is that it's never the spec you're performing for that's the problem... it's everybody else. The eye contact doesn't apply to the other spectators, so this is where the angles and left hand motion come into play.

This is also where misdirection comes into play. The audience will naturally watch the speaker, so asking the spectator a question and waiting for an answer is a plan. The I approach I use for "what is it" or whatever it's called is to draw attention to the card in the spectator's hand by asking them a question about it. Double pleasure. And with the left hand moving (as suggested) to point to the card itself, you're sorted.

Thanks everyone for the advice. As ever I can get a good cross section of experiences in here.

In answer to one question posed I learned the move from Royal Road so I haven't had the advantage of seeing it performed in a broken down way.

I used to worry about the noise with a slip cut but I have managed to cut this down and as per the advice here talk through it.

I am looking to use the top change in my ambitious card routinine and it is such a stunner I want to get it right.

Thanks again for all contributions.

I love this move, and use it at the start of one of my ambitious card routines.

I put their card into the deck, click my fingers then SLOWLY turn over the top card to show it's theirs. Look up, smile, they look amazed, and that's when I do my top change, then go into my ACR at a faster pace.

I've never been caught out yet and mines far from silent.

As somebody else has said as well once you've done the change point at the one card you're holding with the hand holding the deck ( does this make sense?? ) Don't know why but seems to be an extra convincer!
