Book Tests

Postby Ed Wood » Jun 8th, '07, 15:44

At present I use Val Andrews ungimmicked book test, brilliant but I'm looking to expand my horizons. Any suggestions for ungimmicked tests. I keep hearing excellent things about Chan Canastas test. Would I be right in saying this is only available in the Martin Breese book? Is it worth paying out £60 for this?
I'm also looking for a good force for an individual book and not just the magicians choice. Val Andrews test is great but if I could let people have a choice of books but still end up using my chosen book it would be awesome...any suggestions.
I remember seeing Derren Brown performing a book test with Ian Banks, he had the choice of his entire catalogue, anyone know if this is available on DVD etc, I'd like to get another look at it to see if I can figure out the method employed. I believe Mr brown likes Canastas test so would be interested to know if this is what he uses or if a force is employed for choice of books.
Incidentaly I heard that Val Andrews died at the end of last year. From what I hear he was a charming man and a great magician. I believe he self published a book/manuscript on mentalism many a year ago. Does anyone have any information about it? Cheers, Ed

Have a look in Karl Fulves Self Working Mental Magic book, there's a chapter in there of book tests, some of them are very good.

I know virtually nothing about the different techniques used with book tests but have recently aquired silver bullet lite which can be used to perform an impromptu book test with any book chosen by a spectator. I've used this to great reactions so I would recommend it but have nothing to compare it with really.
I own self working mental magic I should get reading....I do love the cheeky dropping a coin in thier hand routine whilst thier eyes are closed...I digress

The classic impromptu ungimmicked book test is by David Hoy - see here:

A number of writers have come up with "improvements" but the original is perfectly OK - and cheap.

There is a fabulous one by Jay Sankey called Seeing Read from The Sankey-Sanders Sessions DVD.
