For a pro, it may be considered more of a professional suicide trip whereas an ametuer has nothing to lose but can boast to his mates that he's been on TV. I'm sure that some are their only for their five minutes of glory and it's a shame that they are let loose.

If anyone watched the later viewing on ITV2, Britians got more talent, then there was an even longer section on the magicians.

I think it's nigh on impossible for magicians to perform to their full capabilities in that situation.
Simon Cowell said "We want to see elephants disappearing" and this is the crux of it. you get maybe 5 minutes to set the stage up and 3 minutes to perform and what kind of magic do they expect? DISAPPEARING ELEPHANTS!!!
and for my next trick I'm going to disappear Simon's ego using just this magic wand (produces 12lb sledge hammer)
there needs to be a magician who can go on and start performing something very visual immediately.
as for the guy with balloons on his head i thought he was real variety show material, funny, silly and a bit c**p.

He got through because they liked him, he was the act. Perhaps there is a lesson in that (even if he was a bit c*** (not the best)).

I'd forgotten about that quote and I think that you're absolutely spot on with your assessment.

For those of us that perform, I wonder if the reactions of our audiences will change from those who have been watching this show?

You can kind of see where Simon's coming from, though.

Obviously he's exaggerating, but all he's saying is that he and the other judges want to be amazed. That's a magician's job, surely?

I don't think the environment precludes strong visual magic - it's just that no one's doing any.

Although it seems anyone performing a dance act (and especially a break-dancing act, however mediocre) is virtually guaranteed a yes. I mean, it's not THAT hard for a bunch of thirteen-year-olds to dress the same and move in time, is it? That said, whenever I try to react physically to music someone invariably phones for an ambulance.

Being a child or having a sob story will guarantee the win. If you can combine the two, double win...

Simon: "So what are you going to do for us?"

Magi: "I'm going to pluck a coin from behind your ear."

Simon: " "

Magi: "No Wait! I learned how to do it from my uncle, who this very morning died in a terrible accident. With his last breath he told me to go on telly and make him proud, and then made me promise to look after his kids who live in a shoebox in the middle of the road and have to eat concrete because they're so poor..."

Amanda: " "

Magi: "...Did I mention that I'm also six years old?"

Amanda: "   "

Simon: "I don't care. You're still rubbish."

Magi: " :( "

Crowd: " BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Simon: "Oh, very well...you're through"

Everyone: " :D "

Did anyone see Dr Gore?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPBnpsHN4_4

It was a nice idea, but some shoddy camera work in some parts.

I dont think that there are that many tricks that he could incorporate into such an act. Maybe the odd one. Flesh wound. Penn and Teller's Ring from stomach trick. String from stomach. Maybe there are a few. I challenge him to come up with an hour and a half running time.

Any ideas?

Nice Python reference there. We had to get up 2 hours before we went to bed. And pay mill owner to let us work there.

All the best,

According to his website
www.madnessandmagic.co.uk
he has two personas one being dr gore for horror magic and the other the great hoodunit for more general magic and lists organ removal and piercing illusions amongst others
I'll be voting for him tomorrow night

From what I saw of the magicians, they all looked like they'd stepped out of a 1970's kid's show. Awful. Goodness me, did Derren Brown and David Blaine die for nothing?!

I did like the horror magician though. But it was very slim pickings.

Last night I enjoyed the Comedian Empressionist. I thought he was very, very good! The idea behind Dr Gore is very good. However, poor execution and him generally lacking in theatre skills made it bad.

The six year old girl. She is ood, but I don't care about her. People only like her because she's six and all "cute" and what not. Is that two kiddy acts through? GAWD!

Paul Potts is great, and so is the dude with the guitar. There are some very good acts.

As for the magicians. Everybody keeps saying that they are all living in the past and are dressed like idiots. I agree. Also that they don't grab their attention with hard hitting visual magic at the beginning. I don't think it needs oto be hard hitting and visual at all. I'm not the biggest fan of mentalism, but I think that mentalism would hav been quite fitting for this show. Go on stage dressed smart, jeans a blazer.

Simon: "So what are you?"
"I'm a sleight of mind artist" I think that sounds quite good.

The effect doesn't even have to be amazing. With good presentation and interaction it would be entertaining.

Perhaps you get through with mind magic. You go out on stage infront of all those specs. Say we're going to conduct a little experiment. I would like everybody to thing of an animal. Crack a joke saying I can see lots of dogs blah blah. Now think of a pet etc. Then start naming the ype of animal, go into a bit more deatil and then point to one of the judges and say it's one of yours. Then name it.

All that is pure presntation. What' so hard about going online and finding out a little bit of info on the judges aye? :P

For those of you in Blackpool this year, and that saw the programme. Two of the featured artists from the convention appeared.

Magic Dave, and domino the duck. He didnt get through because his duck flew away, sort of.

And Romany, she did get through. But nothing more of her was said after the opening round.

Ah well. I think we should come up with an act that loads of us from TalkMagic could all do together next year. That could be fun.

Im kind of glad that Paul Potts won though. That really does sound like a stage name.
