By the way, in answer to the thread title, I have been "doing" magic since I was about 5. My first magic set was a Paul Daniels set. I stopped for about 8 weeks for my GCSEs, but I am now trying to get going again. I am struggling with some card sleights, but I'm hoping that practice really does make perfect!!

James, 19, Lifelong student of magic and will carry on learning for the rest of my days if I'm a very lucky boy.

You may also find it helpful to have a look at this thread:

I've just put some further comments on books and apparatus there.

JAlexBrown wrote:I was just wondering how long everyone here has been doing magic. I've been doing simple magic for roughly one month. I am not really good at it, though, and resources are slim in my rural area. I was wondering a few things. A. How long have you been doing magic? B. What was your first trick you could do? C. Do you know any good sites to learn cheap magic without trick objects or trick objects that can be homemade?

I hope the forum is a good place to ask this question, because everyone here seems to know a lot about the craft.

Thanks for any help,

I've done magic for two years and only a few tricks. My first trick was levitating credit cards. I'm not very good either but I use that as part of my act. I could never be slick at anything, so I always act as surprised as everyone else when it happens. I build them up to expect me to fail. That really takes the pressure off. I tell them I don't really understand how it works. Then I am an observer of the phenomena just like they are. I tell them that maybe it is static electricity or something, etc. I then ask them to try. Maybe they can figure out the secret, because I don't! Anyway, it is a lot of fun for somebody who has so little skill!
