Wear whatever is you.

What is "you", by the way? Tell us in the introductions forum.

Really, in all honesty, this would depend completely on you and the kind of magic you want to perform. If you want to do a Tommy Cooper tribute act then it's a fez and dinner suit. However if you're doing street stuff this may not be appropriate. Unless of course you're angle is going to be the old school magi doing his stuff on the street for the kids. It's all down to you.

A hat? You have thought this through haven't you? Are you sure you want a hat? Again this depends on you and the image you want to project.

And I can't believe you feel the need to ask for links for clothing stores. How lazy are you? Ever heard of Google? Or those big brick buildings that came before the internet. I think they used to be called shops or something.

But to be serious, just think about the image you want to project and the style of magic you're going to mainly specialise in. Take it from there.

With all due respect, and I do hope I do not come across as being rude, but as others have said here, you really are the only person that can answer that.

You know the style of magic you do.
You know the patter you use
You know the persona you use
You know the audiences you perform to.

Personally I would go with smart. The rule of thumb is to always be dressed smarter than your audience. Having said that I can think of a million and one exceptions to the rule.

I am looking to buy some clothing for when performing gigs, like smart, type clothing, and some sort of hat.

To be honest clothes arnt really my thing, anybody got any clue about what i should be looking to buy?

Maybe some links?

Thank you

Well, if 'clothes aren't your thing' and all you really want is a hat I suggest a book that Tomo is flogging and membership of your nearest naturist site could be a good start. Google is your new bestest friend.

The sensible advice is above.

Different Clothes for Different Acts

Postby Amanda Angeli » Jul 4th, '07, 02:09

Hello James,

Like everyone else has said, it is only you who can decide what to wear. That being said, personally, I have different outfits for the different types of acts I do.

For my Flying Tiger Act, I wear tight short khaki shorts, high boots, a green sports bra, a leather flight jacket from WWII, and a white silk scarf. It breaks the "rules," as Bananafish said, but then again, it is me.

In my Hawaii Act, my outfit is a pink string bikini with a tiger shark necklace and a cowrie shell anklet, and two ponytails, after all, it's a surfing show.

In my Mentalist Act, I wear a long flowing gypsy skirt and a peasant blouse for the act takes place in my gypsy wagon.

And so on. None of my outfits are traditional. None would probably be allowed at the Magic Castle in L.A. but all of them are simply me, and, if you can't have fun doing what you're doing, what is the point.

So, the bottom line is don't sweat the outfit. Just be you. You know yourself better than anybody else and so all you have to do is to gear your magic around who you are and your clothes around your magic.

Love,

Amanda Angeli

Personally I would recommend a gold sequinned man thong, some flip flops and a Jay Sankey Assassin pouch to carry your stuff in. You know, keep it classy

I agree with greedoniz, I don't like to look stupid when doing magic. Although I usually go for a tiger skin printed thong and knee high boots.

But seriously the only thing I usually make sure that I have is easy access pockets for loading (and I don't want to see this quoted in the innuendo thread).

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Getting back to the original topic, if you need to carry and swap props, ropes, coins, cards etc then obviously pockets will be necessary which indicates perhaps a jacket of some sort. There's no point in buying and wearing the full Tuxedo suit thing unless that's what you feel comfortable in and is appropriate for the venue/occasion. Conversely, baggy cargo pants and a sweat shirt may be equally out of place at a more formal booking. Decide what you need to have about your person, the types of places where you'll be performing and see what you already have which will fit in. If you're worried about styles and fashions, how about asking a female friend or family member? Women seem to have the knack of understanding such matters when important for presentation purposes and their advice might save embarrassing and expensive mistakes!

Mandrake, as usual, is right.
I'm a bit of a scruffy whelk usually so when performing I generally go for jeans, t-shirt and a casual suit jacket. This as said before is mainly for pocket space which is vital for walkaround. Obviously if at a wedding or a more formal event I forego the jeans and get the matching trousers to go with the suit.

At the end of the day wear something you feel suits you but at the same time wear something suitable for the event you are performing at. This doesn't count of course if you wish to create a 'larger than life' character in which to perform magic as people know what to expect when hiring you.

Thats true i guess, the sort of magic i do is more like derren brown (not that i like to compare the style i have to famous magicians), but its a cross between brown and resteraunt, walk around magic.

So i will just need some smart clothing maybe a suit.

No rush i guess right now.
