I think that Lee Evans and Peter Kay are the most genuinely funniest on the circuit at the moment. There is a lot of poor comedy out there at the moment that is, as Seige said 'recycled'.

I agree with Pete and Dud - comic genius when you listen to them and lest not forget Spike Milligan. There was brilliance in his madness

I enjoy Friends. I'm also perfectly straight. Just because someone doesn't watch an old man chase pretty young women about doesn't make them gay you know.

I find it incredibly amusing that you can call people who watch Friends "idiots" whilst simultaneously hailing Benny Hill as hilarious. There's nothing about Benny Hill to get.

Sorry, but that's what the image of Friends conjures up. The whiny voices alone give me a migraine and it's not even something I could have in the background. I'm really perplexed as to it's appeal beyond that of fifteen year old girls.

There's a lot about Benny Hill to get. Have you seen his parodies of French arthouse directors, The Cook Report and Mastermind?

There's a lot of wordplay involved and it's very inventive. Modern programmes such as Two Pints Of Lager with it's crude vulgarity are just
vile. Innuendo meant that a lot of wordplay had to be used rather than four letter words.

Come on, you must find 'Chow Mein' funny?

How about Terry & June though Freddie? Post modern brilliance that deconstructed the middle classes, or just cr*p?

I think Friends is Excellent. I dont care, I have all 10 series on DVD and could easily sit there and watch it for a whole weekend.

Lee Evans -- maybe in doses.
Peter Kay just isnt funny at all.

Chris Rock is funny but his voice can do my nut in sometimes.

I think Im the funniest person I know, I can easily slay myself with some of the things I come out with

Lee Evans is not only a great visual comic, his stand-up is well observed and written and he has the personality to carry it off. I've met the bloke twice and he's once of the nicest, most humble comedians you could ever come across. A lovely chap.

Phoenix Nights was Kay's masterpiece. The reason why his appeal is so wide is because he picks up on quintessentially British references and quirks. Now an American would be able to get these as much as we would Friends references to obscure US celebs. At least they don't try and pretend to.

That's fair enough, I just don't think it's right to go making generalisations based upon that

I can't say. It's been a while since I saw any of his shows. When I get a chance I will give it a go and if it's more sophisticated than what my memory tells me I will happily admit as much.

At least we agree on Two Pints of Lager

It was good. Very good. As was the preceding series 'Happily Ever After', but for social comment on middle-aged marriages and the difference between the classes, you really have to watch the televisual feast that was 'George & Mildred'.

One scene, where Mildred asks her next door neighbour what their cheeky, bespectacled son, Tristram wants for his birthday and is told: "He wants an action man with gripping hands."

Mildred gives George a sly glance and replies: "Don't we all dear!"

Do watch some his shows (the complete ones) from the early Seventies and I'm sure you'll find them funnier than you remember. The memory of Benny has been tainted over the years thanks to the PC brigades hounding of him and lack of repeats on tv. Quite a few people have been pleasantly suprised when they have visited me for an evening of Benny.

As for making ill-informed generalisations, I'm allowed to. After all, I;m the Alf Garnett of magic.
