Where can I get Shattered by Marc Spelmann- The props

Postby Johnny Bravo » Aug 16th, '07, 18:09

A while back I saw an effect on one of Marc Spelmanns 4 DVD sets whilst with a friend.

The effect was 5 brown paper bags which get eliminated by magi slamming his palm down on them & then the last one is revealed to have a a broken cut sharp bottle.

I forgot the effect name but as Alakazam produced this I asked them for it & was told it was called Shattered but they don't have any in stock & they gave no info on if they'd be getting any.

So does anyone know the effect & if so where I can get the required props & lastly how workable is this close up?

Thanks.

I have seen a version of this on Patrick Kuffs - Mind Stunts called Dangerous Monte using N*****n bottles.
Great DVD by the way.

Perhaps it's a version of "Smash and Stab"??

Wayne Dobson, I think.

You could check it out. The props sound similar, but they were spikes on blocks if I remember. Either way, the principle sounds the same.

Mark

EDIT: oops another edit. I've had a quick look, and there seems to be more than just "Smash and Stab". Try also "Devil's Nail" and "Russian Roulette". They seem similar but I've had no experience of them. If I remember, the difference was a gaff that made it 100% safe.
But don't take my word for it.

Have a look for "When Magic Tricks Go Wrong" on YouTube (or whatever). It still makes me shake.

Youch yes I've seen that when magic tricks go wrong, not nice at all, but then I would never do anything with even 1& of a risk involved, (hence the reason I stay in bed so much, have you seen the dangers in the world :) )

What occurred to me on this was that it was 100% safe & looked to pack light.

I shall get hold of mates DVD & get the exact routine name & then come back to y'all.

The premise of the effect is certainly not a new one. I know Luke Jermay has a version in his Coral Fang manuscript though I never really warmed up to it. I do recall Craig Browning saying he has used it on occasion so it can't be all bad though.

The devil's nail II seems popular, have you though about spike from www.nothingupmysleeve.co.uk i have got to order one soon. I intend to do this not as a 'trick' but as a serious psychic experiment.

Mmm £115.00 though, think I'll look into the Shattered method a bit more.

Sounds exactly like 'Real Danger' by Columbini. Magic Warehouse stocks it.

Hiya

I just had cause to re-watch the Spelman DVDs recently, and I didn't recall the effect you talk of.

There's the Staple Gun routine, but not the glass one.

I do believe the one you SHOULD be going for is the aforementioned Kuffs routine with paper bags and 'broken glass'. Absolutely 100% safe, and 100% idiot proof. Could be done with 3 bags or 10 bags...

Check out Kuffs' Mind Stunts DVD. It's a killer effect. Especially if you use your forehead for the final two 'choices'. ;)

I know that Alex Crow does this in cabaret and i don't like the dynamite illusion so this would make a great end to my show.

It is indeed a fantastic effect (Danger Monte, Kuffs)... and yes, it WOULD require a large purchase...

But hey, it's a reputation maker, and would still be cheaper than the likes of Spike, Devils Nail etc.

There IS another way however, which would be perfect for a stage presentation, which would cost you a whole lot less...

Oopsy soz to the Mods for giving too much away their.

Seige, unfortunately I don't do stage work, just close up & I liked the idea of this because it looked like it packed lights, where as carrying long steel nails I would imagine don't pack light.
