In my teens magic was my life, and inspired by the reactions to David Blaine's sloppy performances, I sought out some work. At the age of seventeen I did six gig's (two weddings and four company parties) but this came abruptly to an end when I was caught handing out business cards by the organizer. woops.

I hid my talents when i went to uni, as i didn't want the hassle of being asked to perform when trying to relax (and I wanted to be cool, sorry but magic is pretty geeky). I devoted all my time to music and stopped practicing. For apparently no good reason i've recently become obsessed again, and it's giving me a headache. I have no real intention of making a career out of magic but now that I'm spending all my free time practicing it seems a shame not to be performing.

I have never discussed my tricks and techniques to anyone before, as i thought 'why would i share my secrets'. Now I realize that there are plenty of decent magicians who wouldn't have too much trouble working out my old routines.

I'm very excited to have found this forum and look forward to contributing and having my effects criticized. I'm looking to by a camera to start filming and will have something to show soon.

Q: Why does everyone do c*** (not the best) double lifts? My school friends were a tough audience and i was forced to learn to push off up to three cards by feel (without a break). I hardly see anyone doing this. Sometimes there's opportunity to get a break but routines like 'ambitious card' surely demand a 'perfect' DL. Sorry if i've offended anyone but it does frustrate me when people do strange things just to lift ''the top card". Does anyone also feel unreasonably passionate about this?

Q: Where can i put video's to show you guys, without it ending up floating around you-tube or meta-cafe. If this is not possible i will be much more reluctant to share videos.

Welcome. I'm sorry you think magic is 'geeky'. If you're worried about your videos ending up on youtube, I wouldn't post them here either. They'd be just as easily accessible here as on youtube. They could be put in the restricted section, but it will take you some time and experience to get access.

I've just read my intro and realized how arrogant i seem. Well too late now. I do think magic is geeky but I don't think that that is a bad thing; other interests of mine are maths, physics and the game of 'go'. I wasn't taking the *, merely explaining why i gave up. But I'll stop groveling and leave the point alone.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi and welcome to TM

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Welcome Bob

I've just read my intro and realized how arrogant I seem

Actually, I didn't think the intro was arrogant at all! It was one of the best intro's that I've read for a while and I don't disagree with anything that you wrote, maybe I have just a few different views but I see where you are coming from.

I often think when seeing some AC routines that people don't practice DL's too much because of the performer believing them to be technically easy. You do see a lot of sloppy DL's being performed and I wonder if there's a mental barrier where inexperience suggests that it can't be that difficult to lift x as one (trying to be careful of exposure here) so therefore I'll practice other things instead.

I've used a DL a lot over the years but have recently been substituting it where I can with a top change after seeing James Brown lecture and I've been surprised at how invisible it is to the specs, yet it achieves the same result in many situations. Like so many other things in magic, you just need balls to try it

Anyway, welcome again

David Blaine's sloppy performances

I too agree.

I've just read my intro and realized how arrogant I seem.

I didn't find it arrogant at all.

Well too late now.

If you still think that it was arrogant, you could always edit it.

Oh and welcome to the boards!

Hi and welcome to talk magic

Personally I don't think Blaine is a sloppy performer - but there are debates about him elsewhere on the forum - so I won't taint your intro thread with a discussion here.

It's good that you are rediscovering magic. I do agree with you about there being too many sloppy double lifts. It is such a wonderful move and it (imho) damages magic to do it badly.

Interesting that you play Go. I played many years ago - but so few people play these days I haven't picked up a stone for a long time.

I look forward to reading you magic thoughts here.

Initially, this seems like a strange decision to me but if it is invisible then it would be good to have the choice. I'll get practicing.

There are indeed very few go players and I fail to get people interested where ever I am. Such a shame, it's easily the most beautiful game I've found.
