The method you have been using isn't the wrong method. The guy from Ellusionist is probably refering to something similar to the method taught in the Tarbell Course in Magic. I have read and learned the method I think you are describing, but ditched it because I like this one better. If you want to switch methods, that is your choice, but you aren't doing the wrong method right now. There are many methods for performing this flourish and your little friend (in typical Ellusionist fasion) believes that his method is the only correct one and any method other than his is wrong .
