Elephant is an absolute classic, as is the original hunchback of notre dame...that heart rending moment when he says "i never realised just how ugly i was until i saw how beautiful you are..." genius writing...

mel brooks for me, and woody allen films, their earlier ones are all classics...whenever i mention brooks' "history of the world part one", i draw a blank..genius film!

as is - YellowBeard, but i cant seem to buy it on dvd last time i checked...

modern day - i'd say Devil's Rejects is up there, and that Life is Beautiful...the ultimate dad!

but overall, too many to make a top 5, well...top 100 maybe...

Mel Brooks, the original version of 'The Producers' was a great film.
I enjoyed the stage musical version with Lee Evans but couldn't bring myself to watch the film which had smug-faced,unfunny Will Ferrell in it.

Yuck!

As for modern films, 99% of them are generic US rubbish all aimed squarely at some kind of 'demogrphic' whether it be empty headed teens, adults that haven't grown up (Batman, etc) or laddish types who want to see cars blowing up, it's all stereotypical guff lacking in plot, depth, characterisation and decent acting.

None of the teen-screaming, gore laden horror films of today can match the atmosphere of the Universal monster films of the 30's, or the outright creepiness of the 1922 Nosferatu for that matter.

Absolutely agree. The Exorcist is the scariest film ever made, ever. I saw it first at a cinema as a 15 year kid with a shaved head and wearing doc martins. I watched the entire film through the gaps in my fingers and didn't sleep without the light on for the next 2 weeks. It scared me to death.

Now I love it. It's pure evil genius. My fave horror film ever, and how films like Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween can be placed above it in "scariest ever movie" polls is beyond me.

The book is also terrifying. The only book I've read that made the hairs on my neck stand up. Chilling.

I must agree with freddie on Nosferatu is one of the best of horror films ever made.

I am not really a film buff but I must say I do like once upon a time in the west and other westerns from that Ilk. Horror now has become to formulated unlike the good old days of Hammer. The Witchfinder General was on the other day dated but good.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Aaah! Hammer! Atmosphere and a story! The good old days!

It suprises me how people lap up the rubbish that's churned out these days, things like Saw interest me not one jot and as for all the apalling "comedies" with people like Ben Stiller in them, my stomach churns.

Mr Bean's Holiday is more sophisticated than any of this dross.

People that like decent acting and a plot line say 'film', the idiots that like insubstantial dross (no doubt on a pirate DVD filmed on someone's phone so they can say they've seen it first) tend to say 'movie'.

It helps a lot when you first meet someone and want to work out in the first ten minutes whether they have any taste whatsoever.

mr. bean...jacques tatti must be revolving like a good 'un at the mere mention of the name..awful, awful creation...

nosferatu is a great movie  as is metropolis...and, even with Lord Freddie's profile info, no one has mentioned any Laurel and Hardy films..

"in the blue ridged mountains of virginia...."

where's my hammer?

"Boiled eggs and nuts..."

Stan & Ollie, comedy legends that no one seems to mention anymore.

As awful as Mr Bean is (Mon Oncle is my fave Tati BTW) it's still more sophisticated than anything Carey, Sandler, Martin, etc have been involved in.

Steve Martin...now he makes me sick...he was trendy for a while and everyone said they liked his as they thought it was the thing to say.

I'll sum up his acting style:

SHOUTING...smug face....SHOUTING...smug face...
(repeat for thirty years)

The Haunting is quite a good black and white psychological horror type film, unexpected ending too...makes a change...

Tin Drum is a great film too, very surreal german story...

Jim Carey, for me, is like someone pulling faces for a baby to get them to laugh as they don't understand anything else. It really insults the intelligence and anyone outside of the US who finds him funny should be thoroughly ashamed of themself and forced to take an IQ test.

The same goes for (prepares for idiots getting defensive) The Simpsons.
A badly drawn, children's programme which "wacky" computer programmers herald as a symbol of their "fun side".

"Look at my screen saver of Homer Simpson as the Mona Lisa!"

Oh, my sides are splitting!

As for those fools that wear a Simpson's tie to work to show that they're fun, you are not fun. Just childish. The Simpsons is trendy, but it's no more adult than the Tweenies.

So what if it ironically has badly drawn guest stars each week? A poor novelty that should have ended after three episodes.

GROW UP!

completely disagree there with the Simpsons not being funny...

I bet if Reg Varney said it whilst wrestling with Catweazle and singing a Boney M song it would be like catnip to you...

Jason King was awful, but also fantastic in equal measure...i know you like him...but come on now...

simpsons = slapstick/irony/satire/ and more...stop being so 1976 about it...

1976 is when the 70s died as far as I'm concerned...

Simpson = children's programme which is cool to like. I saw a GROWN MAN with a complete set of Simpson's dolls hanging in the back of his car.
If I was PM, people like that would be shot!!!

It's never made me laugh, badly drawn, irritating voices and people just seem to say they like it as they feel it's what's expected of them. You hardly hear anyone dare stand out and say they think it's a tedious pile of whiny voiced children's nonsense that thinks it's clever because they have someone awful like Robin Williams doing a guest voice this week.

Fodder for fools.

Now, Jason King, wouldn't you want to BE him? Stylishly dressed, speaks millions of languages, can solve any crime, eats the finest food and stays in the best places, no one can get the better of him and the women love him.
I tihnk you're jealous old bean, get growing that 'tache!!

Robin Williams awful I must say. Tacky sentiment aimed at type with no back bone. I ve never seen him do anything good. "Nano Nano" thats not funny. Frankie Howard saying "Oh no Mrs" on the other hand.

Harrold LLyod was a genius. I agree with Abraxus Ben Elton is a Smug self publicising, turn cloak of the highest order.

Ben Elton starting out "thatcher thatcher thatcher thatchter I am well working class me"

Ben Elton with tv show "Please welcome Mr Jefery Archer, good dya sir how are you? any chance of a knighthood wink wink nudge nudge"

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

At least Bernard Manning stuck to his guns.....

On the subject of films, Hollywood dross aside, has anyone else seen the Mondo Cane films? Or is it just me?
