Yes LG is a great make although cheaper than many others, it is a leader in Asia as I said manufacturing LCD screens for many name brand company's. Richer Sounds sell the old models or end of line models real cheap. I paid over £2000 for my LG LCD but you can get them well under a grand now. Just make sure it is HD - High Definition!

And if you want the highest quality, then make sure the panels resolution is 1080p.

in the past, there were more pros & cons...

Plasma:
Pros: better contrast, blacker blacks, whiter whites, bigger size screens, handle fast moving images well.
cons: no FULL High Def, annoying screen glare, screen burn (images get "burnt" into the screen and can be seen as a "ghost" image).

LCD:
Pros: higher definition (more pixels), no screen glare, no screen burn.
cons: not as good as plasma for fast moving images, blacks are not as black as a plasma. expensive.

the latest technology means that many of the short comings of both systems have been resolved on the newer built models. for example, plasma screen burn is no longer permanent, and FULL HD 1920 x 1080p plasmas are available. New LCD's have much greater contrast, motion blur in LCD's has been addressed with the new 100 Hz models that refresh the screen faster and you can now get LCD's up to 70" screen size.

in other words, the latest versions of both plasma and LCD by good brands are much improved. So the only solution is to go to a store, watch some "normal TV" (as has been mentioned, not the demo DVD) and decide what you personally prefer (watching a standard definition signal on a FULL HD TV can be a bit "ordinary").

there are exceptions, but generally speaking:

for Plasma you have 3 options:
"standard" Definition 852 x 480 pixels
"High" Definition 1024 x 768 pixels
FULL High Definition 1920 x 1080 pixels

for LCD you have 2 options:
"High" Definition 1366 x 768 pixels
FULL High Definition 1920 x 1080 pixels

more pixels means "potentially" better picture, however... the TV can only do so much, the signal quality you provide your TV is a major influence.

for me, I prefer LCD. I have a Sony Bravia 1920x1080. great picture, handles fast moving action well, excellent contrast, 178 degree viewing angle and ZERO reflection on the screen. However the new Plasmas are also great so get along to a store and decide what suits you best... making the decision is half the fun!

Brilliant advice.

Here's a horror story, happened last week...

My bestist (certainly oldest—in many ways) buddy just bought a Toshiba, 40 inch LCD, 1080p HD totally dog's danglies.

Cost him just a shade below £2000. Which to me, for a TV, is ludicrous!

Anyway, although this is a very high-spec model, he's taking it back to the shop next week, as he too feels it was mis-sold. Pics from his DVD player look pixellated, and I saw first-hand yesterday that when playing or watching video with black in it, there's a lot of artefacts.

This is exactly what is being said here: buying a HD television with all the trimmings is going to look no better than a standard TV if you're just only putting SD (as opposed to HD) content into it.

Currently, Sky offers very few HD channels. HD DVD players/media are creeping into the mainstream, but it's really quite a let-down.

I am still toying with a projector, esp. after hearing YPud's good reports!
