In fairness Paul, there is a third choice... and it does not involve you telling "porkies" or proof positive that there were in fact "spirits" in the room...

you may well have been mistaken with what you "thought you saw". Someone accidently flicked the glass, bumped the table, whatever... It may simply be you are mistaken with what you "thought you saw". Happens all the time, how big was that fish you caught?

Then, when faced with a look of GENUINE "shock" on the face of the performer, the specs who are are in a heightened sence of excitement, and at or near their most impressionable... will very likely see the "same" thing.

Somewhat like a levitation. You "float" say 2" off the ground, "land" with a thud as you "struggle" to regain your balance, before holding your hands 12" apart and asking "how high did I get?"

Are your specs lying when they recount your foot high float to their friends? no... they are simply mistaken.

I am not saying your other 2 possibilities are wrong, I have no idea because I was not there. But in fairness, any discussion should not ignore the 3rd I mention here.

As for Sylvia Brown, I guess she's not always "this" bad but...

Or the 4th explaination which is the true one.

Every night I send out my invisible pixie friends who fly around the world and create mischief. they may move objects or whisper others secrets in the ears of sensitive people (they hear this on a sub-conscious level).
Some may ask how they do this but I think it isn't wise to look into it as the more you question the pixies the less likely they are to cooperate. Ooo those pesky lil' rascals with their shiny noses.

Although it is irrefutable that my pixies exist I cannot actually produce any direct evidence but I have lots of people who have experienced the pixie phenomena and have many stories of the amazing things they have done. Anyone who questions my pixies is therefore either closed minded or has their own agenda.

 You want to watch a medium jump...

I have a black cat... we were doing a mini seance in the living room... total darkness and quiet... the suspense was awesome... I was just about to move into some "dirty work" when all hell broke lose.

Spookie (my cat) managed to get into the room... simultaneously, as I'm explaining how some people will feel the power of the spirit raise up from the base of their spine and up through the top of their head, she brushes up against two individuals...

...they jump and scream but can't see a thing... suddenly two plants fall over on one side of the room and then, seemingly at the same time, some things got knocked off the couch and onto the floor.

I turn on the lights (by this time, the cat is back in the bedroom) There's not a single thing around... no explanation... The Spooks (well, Spookie at least) had made themselves known... there was going no further with the ritual.

:D Craig!

At Saturday's seance I mentioned how we often have the spirits of two Victorian children come into the room and play with the hair of the lady sitters. Sure enough one of the lady's reported having her hair stroked when the lights were out.

"I'm terrified!" she cried through the darkness.
"Don't bottle it!" shouted one of her friends. "Keep going! Don't show any fear!"
"I'll never sleep again!" squeeled the terrified woman.

It was most entertaining. I never thought I'd hear the phrase "don't bottle it" mentioned in the seance room! Oh, and before anyone moans - this was a night of "psychic & ghostly entertainment". No one was contacting dead relatives and no-one was being conned. Well, not much.

Say what you like about the spook business, but I'd rather experience events like this than mess around with sponge balls!

Oh yikes - nothing against sponge balls. They are very entertaining.

No? Well then, memory doesn't exist. If it doesn't work all the time, exactly how it's claimed, it's fiction.

It has never been claimed to work all the time.

Leaving aside the fact that I was joking (how much clearer could it have been?), your comment rather proves my point.

Who said psychic powers have to work all the time? That's a requirement that seems to be imposed by sceptics (in some cases - I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush).

If Sylvia Browne really is psychic then I wonder if she knows how long she has left before she smokes herself to death

Well, it doesn't really. If it was a joke, then it makes our point...pointless.
Memory can be proved and tested. Psychics cant be proved to be any better than guess work. If thats because 'it doesn't work all the time', then surely being a psychic is pointless too, as we could get the same results by guessing.

I suppose the debate about whether or not psychic powers work all the time is fair enough, after all there are many things in this life that are unreliable and if there was this thing that existed that we didn't know much about we wouldn't know what stopped it working either (although laboratories would seem to be one such inhibiting factor).

However, if you're charging people a large amout of money relative to time for a service then yes, it has to be accurate. I bet there's not many psychics who would admit after a couple of minutes that their powers weren't up to scratch that day and not charge you. If I went to a customer's house to paint it and after a day I'd made a bit of a hazy mess of their living room they wouldn't pay me and rightly so. The excuse that some days I just can't paint would get me nowhere fast.

I have a power that doesn't work all the time. It is the mystical power of guessing.

Even if something does work intermittently under trials it would still be recorded statistically above that of pure guesswork in the same way that a placebo effect in medical trials is accounted for
