Help creating my first simple routine

Postby Soulnafein » Dec 10th, '07, 21:25

Hello everyone. I'm studying Bobo's Modern Coin Magic with the help of Mike Jay suggestions: http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic19167.php

Actually I'm at the point where I'm supposed to learn a simple routing. I don't like too much the first three provided by bobo and I don't like too much the example one provided by Mike. So I was thinking of a couple of tricks that I can do (but that need to be improved) and how to mix them up properly. I had a vague idea for a simple patter too. I would like to share this creation with the forum and I will accept all your suggestions.
This is the sequence of tricks that I want to perform:

1 Produce a coin using SWITCHOVER
2 THROUGH THE HANDKERCHIEF Met. A ( Left Hand, twisting handkerchief with right and pulling coin with right
3 Handkerchief spread on the left palm, ILLUSIVE COIN PASS to left hand.. vanish
4 Pull handkerchief with right hand showing it and left hand empty
5 Handkerchief in right pocket and coin CP in right hand
6 Produce coin from left elbow after looking for that in behind left and right elbow
7 STANDARD VANISH to left hand.
8 Close the empty left hand again, pass the right hand magically on the closed left hand putting the coin back secretely (I don't remember the name of the trick, suggestions?), suspence and open left hand showing coin inside
9 Fake take of right hand (FD)
10 Move right hand far on the right side, fake coin flip towards left hand (far on the left side)
11 Show coin between thumb and middle fingers left hand
12 Take handkerchief in right pocket + secretly take from the same pocket silver glitter or another appropriate substance/powder
13 Using WITH AN HANDKERCHIEF to load left hand with glitter/powder and vanish coin
14 Throw handkerchief away and open the left hand slowly blowing on glitter/powder to give the impression that the coin has been disintegrated.

Is it rubbish? What do you think? After this part I will write a patter.

I suggest to go ahead and give it a whirl. What is the worst that will happen it won't work? I think it will work and I think you will make changes as you go as is the natural way of things. The only real issue I have is the glitter, although very visual it is a pain to clean up and if you are doing this in somebody else's home they may not appreciate the mess. But I don't think it is rubbish.

yeah don't be so impatient young skywalker.

we have to visualise what your saying and see if it flows into a routine, from what i can follow it seems like a fair sequence with a visual ending thats all ways good.

8} could be palm load or you could use a pinky load, theres a nice dvd i think that explains it and a few other sleights that will be invaluable, name escapes me as my files are currently packed.

my practise routine usualy involves, retention vanish, classic p**m, point to left fist and say (if I'm demoing i dont usualy talk to myself :D ) "if you train for years at coin work you can open a pour in your hand" show left hand empty and point to area coin should be in "you can bearly see the pour", palm load aparently closing empty left hand palm down.
right hand turns palm up and opens above left and smacks back of left hand, "this causes the tendons to contract and push the coin out" fingers move in and out coin in finger p**m, show coin.
close left hand around coin, heal clip, "by pulling on the tendons at the wrist you can suck it back in" second vanish, "can you feel it go on try.... no thats how good the consealment is", tenkie with right, show both hands empty, bring under left and then use to close left hand wilst doing a tenkie load, sankey has done great work in this area and reveal by pulling little finger base joint, showing right empty.

so to recap:-

retention vanish.
classic.
palm load.
finger p**m
first reveal.
heal clip.
heal clip steal.
tenkie.
tenkie load.
second reveal.

nice logical flow practise of 8 seights that are the basis to many coin routines, can be done silently or with patter, uses only one coin, can be done with a cop /silv to give a suprise ending and to make the routine more challenging to you.
iv'e demed this to myself over coffee and got bookings and on the buss, so have your business cards ready.

That would depend on your patter. I would either go with something more valuable or less valuable. For example you could just wind up with a hunk of silver that used to be the coin. If it were me I'd go with something more valuable because I like a positive outcome. Again what it is would depend on you and your patter.

Disco man I like your practice routine. I would add Goshman's coin toss. Okay not sure if it is actually Goshman's and I have no idea what it is called. But it is where you toss the coin in the air. Then throw the coin from one hand to the other. But of course the coin vanishes at some point. Only I don't bother with the toss in the air first. It's just a move I really like because the hands never go near each other. They stay a good foot apart at least.

12 Take handkerchief in right pocket + secretly take from the same pocket silver glitter or another appropriate substance/powder
anybody else thining ideal use for tt.
theres some stuff called milar which is like a silvery plastic, think survival blankets, it cuts up well and is very visual.
since your retrieving with a hank why not reveal a bent coin or one with a hole in it (nice idea here would be to nave them hold the coin through the hank and then stab a pencil through it.

I would add Goshman's coin toss
its my routine leave it alone, just kidding, sort of false take and even falser transfer. :P
the routine is graded in dificulty of sleights easy to hard, for me anyway but is open to variations as required but as it stands its a great introduction to the most common sleights in coin magic and bobos.

I'll leave it alone. My coin routine, 'since we are sharing' goes something like this:

ME: Honey, do you have a moment to watch this I'm working on a new routine.
Wife: Sure honey I love your magic I always have time to see something new
ME: Okay (pulling out a half dollar) now wa.....(immediate interuption)
Wife: Hey where did you get a half dollar give me that the mortgage doesn't get paid all on its own you know.

Just joking really my I am very lucky in that my wife is very supportive.

You have an excellent starting base for a routine there, Soulnafein. You did exactly what I expected of anyone who reads the Bobo guide - take the naff idea that I gave you and make something that is good. My routine suggestions are just simple, little things to try to get your creative juices flowing (I'd never do one of the routines that I suggest in those posts - they are just examples and nothing more).

Seems to me that your creative juices are, in fact, flowing. Excellent.

Now, I will assume that you have a notebook where you've written your routine down. What you must do at this point is get that routine down to where you don't even have to think about what step, or what sleight, comes next. In other words, you have to be able to do it in your sleep.

As you do this, patter will come to you. Add it and make note of it in your notebook. Over the course of your work on this, it will evolve (on paper) into a good, working routine.

Next comes the proof of the pudding: You show your routine to family and friends. If you have it down, then you will be confident in your moves and in your presentation. You will use your patter lines and some of those lines will fall flat, but other lines will work a treat. You keep those lines and get rid of the ones that fall flat.

Also, you'll find when performing that you will identify sleights that don't work the way that you hoped. You might get caught out here and there. When this happens, your routine will evolve to the next level as you continue to keep notes on what you've cut out and little things that you might just add in on the spur of the moment.

Over the course of time, your routine will evolve into a powerful presentation.

Congratulations, you are on your way to being a good coin guy! :P

Mike.

Looks like a brilliant starting routine to me.

Now you're ready for the really fun part. As Michael said, the more you practice and perform it, you'll find little bits that don't quite work and things that would work better and the whole thing will just adapt and change into something all your own.

That's one of my favourite things in magic, watching a routine that I've come up with, constantly changing and growing into something better.

Soulnafein, I had a thought today (scary, I know)...

What if you started the routine off with pouring a bit of the glitter into your hand and it became the coin? This way, when ending the routine by opening your hand with the coin gone, you blow away the glitter - in other words, the coin started as glitter and now has returned to glitter. The glitter can be easily stored and carried on your person in a cigar tube or something similar.

This could reasonably be accomplished with a CP or FP for the coin in conjunction with a TT, which would start empty but then be loaded with the glitter for the end of the routine right there at the beginning of the routine. The hard part will be ditching the TT without spilling the glitter - hard but achievable.

Just a thought...

Mike.

Soulnafein writes, in part: ". . . What do you think?"

I think it's great for an early effort. But don't be too quick to dismiss Mike's suggestions. (see post above)

And remember: Bobo isn't just about coins; it's about routining, too.

I have to say, I like Micheals idea, that way your routine has a definate start and end, and you could even create a name for the whole routine - 'the glitter coin' oir something like that, meaning that as you perform, you can be constantly telling a mini story, rather than just have a flow of several tricks (In a similar way to an abitious card routine)

Let us know how it all goes for you :)

Good luck with it - with work xmas party's coming up I'm sure you'll have loads of victims...I mean volunteers :P
