Lolita System

Postby alz » Dec 2nd, '03, 00:45

Ive been looking at ths thing called the Lolita System by Docc Hilford was wondering whether it was any good. I remember seeing a trick when david blaine used a borrowed deck, what he did was make a prediction an put it face down on the top of his own bicycle deck (which he gave some guy to hold). He then spread the borrowed deck and asked anutha guy to pick one. He revealed his choice and blaine asked the other guy to look at the face down prediction..it matched!!! This is one of the most immpressive tricks ive seen blaine do and cant work out how he did it!!! Sounds a bit like theLolita System though.

PHEW, I was expecting some jackson/king/glitter jokes, lol.

I didn't see the Blaine trick so I can't really say how it works, but with Blaine it is always important to remember that he use cam tricks and stooges a LOT, just a thought.
I was talking with the guy that got Blaine interested in magic and trained him up in his early days a couple of days ago, the guy also used to share a flat with Chappy Brazil (whom was sadly killed), man he's not a Blaine fan either!
I'm starting to think I'm the only fan, but then I like his media skills rather than his....
Anyway I babble as usual...

I haven't seen this weirdly named trick either, do you have a link I could look at?

Thanks for giving me a chance to babble, it's late and there's nobody in the basement :)

Did Ya see Blaine interviewed on GMTV this morning. He actually talked this time :) but as Eamon pointed out, David had become more famous among many people for that Interview than for his magic. As always David being the master publicist.

What I did find interesting was David's take on the spectators for the box stunt. He reckoned they were great and it was the press that to keep the stories interesting had followed all the negative stuff.
So all you Blaine haters may well have to put up with him doing another UK stunt at some point in the future

Most of those of us who have been slightly negative about blaine don't really hate him, we just think he should get back to the magic that he does so well (even without camera tricks) and stop poncing around sitting in tupperware boxes and standing on poles and things. I would gladly watch another magic special if he did one.

There are no gaffs or gimmicked decks used in this effect. [Edited by Mods]
Slightly clearer order of events in the effect:
1) DB spreads the borrowed deck face-up to show it as normal.
2) DB makes a prediction (arranges the top card of another deck)
3) Cards are spread face-down and the spec makes a selection, but doesn't look at it. The selection is placed face-down on top of the borrowed deck.
4) DB turns over selection.
5) Spectator turns over predication and it matches.

Do stooges, no dodgy edits, nothing from a shop. One sleight and it's done. I've done it a few times myself and it can be pretty effective.

I would very much like to see that trick again now.

I find it very interesting that the way the trick was remembered wasn't quite the way it happened. The way it was reconstructed by Alz it is seemingly impossible, and yet when we read the actual order of events it becomes a little more obvious (maybe not so to the layman - but definitely so for most magicians).

Is this a testimony to David Blaines skills as a magician? It's certainly a great technique if you can get away with it, and in fact something that Richard Osterlind (and I an sure many others) have spoken about at length).

It would be sad (although not unprecedented) if the reason the trick was remembered slightly wrong was due to the editing, hopefully this one can be put down to Blaines skill?

I thought I could get away with an abbreviation. Obviously not. Sorry.
I'll bear it in mind in future.

aaahhhh Osterlind, my hero.
When I was starting out with cards but wanted to be able to do something right away I used the Osterlind Card System.
It turns out that I still use it and people still buy me beer to find out how it was done, can I read minds?
Buy me a bear (edit: beer, I have no interest in large dangerous animals when down the pub) and I'll do it again, buy me a brewery and I might think about telling you how.

I love it so much, unless I need to set up a deck for something else, every deck I have is in the Osterlind, just in case, gives me a great get out for any trick that goes west.

Yes, that is something to enjoy, see one thing have another thing described, kinda like when you have your beer goggles on and suddenly everyones a supermodel.
errrr what am i talking about?
/me goes away.

Charles, I didn't do the the abbreviation deletion and normally this wouldn't be much of a problem but, at the moment, there are few things going on which mean extra and constant vigilance is needed. Bear with us as it will be sorted soon. :)
