Mental Note

Postby MATTrix » Jan 25th, '08, 14:32

Anyone else stumbled across this?

http://www.emagicsupply.com/mental-note-p-23.html

They say

'A spectator is asked to think of any geometric shape, ESP symbol or number.

You display a stack of post-it notes and proceed to draw a circle on the face.

The note pad is handed to the spectator and they are instructed to take the pen and draw the shape or number they are thinking of in the circle while you look away.

The pad is then passed to a second spectator who is instructed to remove the drawing from the pad, fold it up tightly and put it in their pocket.

Mental Note is probably the most valuable piece of magic you will buy in your lifetime. $100 for this secret would be more than fair, this is a technique that is equivalent to having a sixth sense or the power of remote viewing.'

There's even a countdown to the release date...

Is this as ground breaking as it claims to be? Can't help but to have doubts.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hmmm. I've just realised this is the same company that sells AWAP, which wasn't really as they described it.

You never know, though. It might be an absolute corker.

Indeed, I wouldn't mind peeking her particulars. Etc.

So that's an official quote then is it?

(I must admit though it made me snigger)

Mental Note is an instant download from Steve Fearson, who has revamped his old business (download magic) to E-MagicSupply (check the ads on our pages here).

Again, as in many descriptions of effects, the write up sounds too good to be true. This effect draws on age old methods with some modern improvements. The handling is about as fair as it can be and avoids the tear, fold, and peek methods normally used.

In many respects it is most similar to Vincent Lynch's PBB Drawing Duplication, but is far easier to do and involves much less preparation.

Nevertheless, I can see many limitations of the method under performance conditions, and the handling will have to be done convincingly, but I can certainly see the utility in this effect...the exchange rate is in our favour here in the UK, so it comes abot £7.

Hello Magi,

Thanks for your comments, I'm sure I once read Angelina liked talk magic or was that black magic...er...anyhow...

...I finally succumbed out of pure intrigue and purchased this ‘Quantum leap in Mental Magic’ which was bigged up big-style (emagicsupply were certainly flexing their marketing muscle on this one with all the emails as well) on their website for the sum of £7. (given the exchange rate).

First off, it’s better than I thought it would be, if worked out correctly the method as Dr Todd said could be a pretty good utility to know, you avoid the tear and the fold...so sneaky, sneaky sneaky. It does take on board old methods, but I still find it hard to believe people havn't been doing this independently for a while... but then again...

The directness of the routines given - if not done subtly could arouse Angelina’s suspicions...alot, so your presentation style and handling will need to be shabba to make this quantum leap.... perhaps if woven with another effect/idea this would help I think.

As with alot of effects there's going to be subjectivity, to me It’s a cute, simple idea that I may or may not use. I should have just posted a review but now I've got this far and all the threads seem to tie up.

I was disappointed by it until I tried it. There is what at first appears to be a big weakness - it's not as hands off a utility as it is made to sound, but in practice it doesn't seem to matter. I've only tried it one-on-one to date, and feared that the spec would merely assume a p***, but he didn't. I'd expect that with two specs involved the weakness becomes even stealthier.

Also, as for the miscall, I acquired from Ryman's a m******** p***** and a r******** that are virtually identical. Ought to be easy enough in a longer routine to switch them in and out for additional deception.

Simon Scott

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.
