this was discussed ages ago if youd take the time to look for it

Ive just noticed that alakazam do a booklet that covers this subject for £7.49. It's called "Lickity Split- The Art of Splitting Cards by Martini "

Splitting cards is essential for making your own gaffs (double-faced cards, half-cards etc) unless you can find specifically gimmicked ones available commercially.

There are 3 layers - two 'printed' layers and a middle hard layer.

The printed layers are VERY thin and delicate, but gentle tempering and SLOW (very SLOW) peeling will yield results. Doing some serious flexing (as done with preparing cards for manipulation) will soften the layers, making peeling easier.

It's a fine art, and something which is quite easy once you get the knack.

By the way, as far as 'glues' to re-adhere the cards after gaffing, I recommend a thin alcohol based glue, as using water based or 'thicker' glues causes the cards to look abnormal.

In fact, the best glue I've found is UHU Spray Glue. Messy, but works.

I've just bought this and, at first glance, it seems useful. However, the products it suggests using are (surprise, surprise) not available in the UK, so you have to hunt around.

I haven't tried it yet (it's a very new acquisition), but you don't need soaking from what I recall.

Also, a DVD release in 2004 is mentioned covering the making of various fakes, including some types that aren't covered by the booklet.
