Replicant wrote:thebigcheese, a DF card is what I would class as a "standard" gaffed card and it is intrinsic to the effect in a trick such as Anniversary Waltz. The revelation of a gaffed card in this instance is justified and, indeed, part of the punchline, if you will. My point is the DF card does not draw unnecessary attention to the deck under those circumstances; it's revelation brings the trick to a natural conclusion without undue suspicion. Some of the Ellusionist gaffed cards, however, are so obvious they virtually scream "trick card!" and coupled with the fact that the performer is likely to be using an unusual deck at the time, e.g. Ghost deck, I think this would elicit a different response from the spectator than Anniversary Waltz (or Blizzard) would. In any case, with very few exceptions, I don't perform card tricks which reveal gaffed cards to the spectators for reasons which I stated in my previous post. That's not to say I don't use gaffed cards in some of my effects - just that the audience are not aware that those same cards are present. ;)

Oh dear, I do hope that made some sort of sense. I know what I mean in my head but sometimes my written skills fail me. :?

I understand where your coming from, in that the DF is a subtle gaff card, and because it gets used in many classic effects such as aniversary waltz, then it slips by..Also because DF's are a very old gaff card, they are seen as a classic of magic. Although I wouldnt own an Elusionist gaff deck, I believe, that if used subtely, then even the most absurd gaff card could be played off to good effect (possibly not this battery thing :? ) if used in a normal routine, but just with a kicker ending. After all, ive been accused of using trick cards by making a card transpose in spectators hands or appear in my wallet or bottle, (even with a borrowed deck!). So as far as the spectator is concerned, if you could make a WHOLE card disspear, then why not just the pip on an ace of spades. Ultimatly, its laymen you want to impress, not other magicians...

The only E gaffs I got any sort of mileage out of where moving pips..

because they do not look gaffed and look like real magic.. but all the fancy pancy art schmart cards can take a runnng jump as they put too much heat on you.

I agree. I have no doubt that those magicians more talented than myself will come up with creative and convincing uses for these "absurd" cards; magicians like Garcia and Houchin, for example. Unfortunately, I don't think Ellusionist's marketing/hype campaign is aimed at professional magicians of this calibre.... Image

By the way, my last post made it sound like I place myself a notch below Garcia and Houchin (I wish), which I most definitely do not! I'm only a lowly AH, after all.

I don't think I'd be even tempted to buy this deck. I don't see the point whenever I can buy singles at other places. In my head its a bit like seeing a nice tie in a shop window and having to buy a whole suit just to get the tie.

Also you might as well jump up and down shouting trick card. As for DF's- in the spec's mind the card is normal even though its not. Yet it is obvious these cards are not and attention will be drawn to them.

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

They could've had the same idea independently, that happens a lot in magic.

However, I still won't buy it, because of the list of reasons I wrote in the other topic about this deck...

Dave's DVD is fantastic and uses standard gaffed cards in a natural way that does not put much heat on the deck. Totallly different angle to the Ellusionist gaffs.

I think it really depends on the audience. Gaffs work a lot for the younger crowd. Always something visual and fast. I still can't make up with the batteries on the gaff though. I have asked this in another independent forum and they flamed me...lots of E fanatics there. They informed me to buy the DVD to know hwo would it work. Yeah right...as if I'll do that.

I see Ellusionist doesn't advertise here at TM any more... with so much "positive" commentary... go figure?

But even bad publicity is publicity. It still surprises me that they've never had a representative on here, trying to defend the stance they take.
