I believe that Lebanon Circle did a similar thing with his fossilised fairies? Didn't he get lots of media coverage for what were claimed to be genuine fossils of winged creatures?

I think that these days they call it "guerilla marketing". Others will see it as life imitating art imitating life...or something. Personally I see it as a good old fashioned long con, executed purely to see how many people will actually fall for it!
