Jerry Hall comes to mind, but then as far as I know she doesn't have three stripes or live underground, so I am probably wrong

OK sorry, got a teensie bit carried away with the last one.....

Try a more serious puzzle.

If one were to dig a hole of 2 metre diameter from one end of the earth to the other (assuming that this were technically possible and barring the fact that the centre of the earth is somewhat warm and somewhat less than solid) so that the hole passed directly through the centre and emerge out the other and be completely straight such that if you were to peer in one end you could see the sky at the other end. OK so we've got our great big hole. What would happen if I (or anyone else for that matter) were to drop a rock of 50cm diameter and having a mass of 25kg down the hole at one end? (ie what would happen to the rock?)

The rock would stay suspended in the middle? From the earth's gravitational pull?

LOL

would the rock go past the middle of the earth, slow down, then come back the other way past the middle, slow down back the other way etc etc
like a bungee until finaly it would spin suspended in the middle at the same speed as the earth?

<<<<<<clueless

that reminds me, considereing the speed of the spin of the earth, when you stand at the north or south pole, why dont you get dizzy?

I agree with bum on the stone.

If I remember right the one about crossing the river goes along the lines of:
You have a fox, a goat and a cabbage to get accross the river in the boat but you can only take one thing accross at a time. You can't leave the fox with the goat or the goat with the cabbage how do you get them all to the other side in just three trips.

Actually that seems too easy so I've probably got it wrong again.

Bab. If you stod on the north pole you would only be spinning 1 revolution every 24hrs and all around yo would be south (cool!) its only on the outside where it gets reeeeaaaalllllllly fast, thats why people who live near the equator are taller than eskimos. :D

Fletch, would the rock not melt because of the speed it would build up just like meteors do when entering the earth because of the air friction?

errrrmmmmmm.......

I'm very much afraid that MoM is quite correct. The rock would indeed be eaten by the underground 3-striped stone-eater.

Obviously.

I'll get me coat...

Theoretically, with no other factors than air resistance then it would do as Babs says. In a vacuum then it should oscillate indefinitely. However none of this is relevant as it is a totally impossible situation due to the nullifying factor of the underground 3-striped stone eater.

Ok, OK I've got me coat, I'm leaving.....

Correctomondo!

You take the goat across come back for the cabage take the cabage across and bring the goat back. Drop the goat off at the origional side and bring the fox across and then go back for the cabbage!

No that 4 moves isnt it? anyway, got to go to college!! Cant exactly say to the lecturer that the fox the goat and the cabbage made me late!!! :D
