Not an anecdote, but some more warnings about card tricks...
People who don't play cards often (including me!) are going to be slow at recognising and remembering cards. It's just not a familiar habit. Allow time for spectators to absorb what they're looking at, and if possible use a card that's easy to remember (ace, two, three).
Young children don't understand even the basic card concepts that adults take for granted. Concepts like: there is only one of each card in a deck, or that shuffling mixes cards in a random and unguessable order. They may not know the names of the suits and values (or even that there are such things), or be able to identify a card by name, much less remember it after it leaves their sight.
This lack of comprehension may well extend to much older age groups nowadays, since family game-playing is becoming rarer and many children simply don't play card games at all.
