back when i was at school i used to do the odd trick for friends. unfortunatley one of these was a magician, who was clearly an extra for the masked magician. anytime he got wind of anything and his little bits of 'i know how thats done' were over, hed then proceed to TELL everyone exactly how they were done, followed by others laughter and chants about how c*** (not the best) i was:(

he had an accident on the rugby field after that! (boys will be boys ;))

Ok, so everyone know card to ceiling?

got the signed card in position on the deck................................. elastic band around the deck.......................................... everything going well.............................................. throw deck at the ceiling............................................ watch a single square of the ceiling lift up and start rotating in the same direction as I had spun the deck ................................ not going so good now....................... wait for what seems an eternity ..................... hear a loud thud about 3 metres to my right above the ceiling.

"Now sir, when the maintenance men come and sort them out, could you ask them if your 8 of clubs was attached to the ceiling tile?"

........................ Paul walks away...............................

While performing professors nightmare for a cub scout meeting, i notices the loop was hanging below my hand. Luckily no one noticed, but I dont know how. Once I saw it, it threw my patter off and I stumbled the rest of the way through the trick

It didn't go wrong as such, but at the climax of Between The Lines a volunteer said "ah I get it. I've read this book before so I was bound to remember bits".

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

Not an anecdote, but some more warnings about card tricks...

People who don't play cards often (including me!) are going to be slow at recognising and remembering cards. It's just not a familiar habit. Allow time for spectators to absorb what they're looking at, and if possible use a card that's easy to remember (ace, two, three).

Young children don't understand even the basic card concepts that adults take for granted. Concepts like: there is only one of each card in a deck, or that shuffling mixes cards in a random and unguessable order. They may not know the names of the suits and values (or even that there are such things), or be able to identify a card by name, much less remember it after it leaves their sight.

This lack of comprehension may well extend to much older age groups nowadays, since family game-playing is becoming rarer and many children simply don't play card games at all.

This is why I bought a dr who and a starwars pack of cards. Red black tricks also work well for younger kids where suits and numbers aren't an issue.

In a magic circle a do-as-I-do routine performed by wan-a-be-magician X went terribly wrong because the spectator who was in fact an experienced magician Y took the request literally and also did a DL when X did a fairly obvious DL! Since we all - except Mr. wan-a-be-magician - spotted both DL it was quite hilarious.

Magic is slight of mind!
