The silver and gold pens I've used in the past (never used them on cards though) were always a bit tempremental. Unless they were brand new or stored properly the acrylic fibre tip would dry out and render the pen useless. Shaking them like a can of spray paint always helped but them the tip would become so saturated with ink it would leave a nice raised line.... which was then really bad news if you wanted it to dry quickly. I certainly wouldn't advise placing two cards together if one had gold/silver ink on it (unless you wanted to perform a foolproof DL)
On the plus side, they are really highly pigmented and will cover anything you write over - black, red, whatever...
Silver sharpies are available, as stated before. Great for writing on an absorbent surface but (like all paint pens) can be rubbed off from shiny sealed surfaces (like a deck of bikes).... even if you let it dry for a week!!
Of course there may have been huge strides forwards in metallic pens recently, but to be on the safe side I'd avoid them if you want to dodge the potential embarrassment of getting sticky, gold or silver ink all over the cards, specs' hands, etc...
