bicycle back design asymmetry

Postby cragglecat » Oct 19th, '08, 20:44

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if there are any known differences on the bicycle back design that can be used to flag up when a card has been removed and replaced? In other words if all of the cards were aligned the same way around and one was removed and put back in after turning it through 180 degrees, is there anything on the bicycle back design that would give the game away? I've been reading an old Anneman effect that utilised this principle but the bicycle design seems to have changed subtely since the original publication. If posting the answer would be considered exposure then I would appreciate a p.m.

Thanks.

You can still get such designs. You might want to try a site like www.cards4magic.co.uk.

Thanks for the link (it looks really useful) but I was wondering whether there was anything on a regular bicycle pack that could be used.

As far as I know, there isn't one. If there was one, and you were unable to find it, then it would probably not be practical to use in an effect.

In the past, I've just coloured in one of the little white dots in the corner with a red marker pen.

At my bicycle ghost deck the printing is not centered properly. The margins are a bit different in size turned 180 degree.
I think it happens a lot of time if you really look for it, but maybe not so obvious like with my ghost deck.

I dont know about the bycycle design, but its a little known fact that teh standard Piatnik back, ( rose roundle, with hatchet line background) Is a one way deck.
And it's very subtle.

Its possible that the design has been changed since Hugard wrote the book.

I've read that too but couldn't see it. I guessed what Dale said, that the back has changed since the book was written.

I know that daryl mentions the differences in borders in his Encyclopedia of Card magic dvd's. He even explains that borderless decks, such as the Bee cards can be used the same way. Just take a close look at a few of your normal decks and you may notice a difference in one of them.

I also seem to recall that the aviator design was popular at the time. This having the non symetrical propeller in the centre.

I just checked my red bicycle deck. The margins are different in width. Not as much as in my ghost deck but they are. Do you mean that with "borders"?

you might want to try and get a few packs of bicycle seconds. I've got a couple that have been printed off-centre, and would definitely work as a one-way deck if I wanted.
