I've had a similar thing to this in the past as well Lady of Mystery, and I do think it's the switch from mentalism to 'magic tricks'

I had a comment on one particular night when a guy said to me something along the lines of 'your card tricks are good, but how you knew I was thinking of my mum was amazing'.

Like a few people on here have said when you've done a mentalism act your specs genuinely believe you have some weird and wonderful ability to get inside their heads, which is then diluted when you pull out a deck of cards or a couple of sponge balls.

Now if I do any mentalism in a working environment I do it after all my usual tricks, and start by saying something like "ok we'll try something a little bit different now.. it may not work.." and let them know I'm moving away from 'magic tricks'
