New to the practice

Hello everybody, I'm Jason Wilkinson. I've been fascinated with magic and illusions my whole life, but I've never really ever taked enough time to learn any of it very well. I used to dabble a little bit with cards and small tricks, but never stuck to it enough to become very proficient in anything.

I'm now trying to get into seriously learning some magic tricks. I don't see myself ever making a career out of it, it's mainly just for fun and interest. I actually am mainly interested in getting really good at coin tricks and sleight-of-hand.

Hello, and welcome to Talk Magic, DEATH. If you want to get into coin magic, you wouldn't go far wrong with Bobo's modern coin magic. This shows you tons of moves, how to use them in effects and introduces you to concepts and creations that you wouldn't have thought of. For sleight of hand with cards, I always recommend The Royal Road To Card Magic as a good starter point. There's a world of stuff waiting for you out there, but I think that I have provided you with a solid foundation to build upon. But in case you are curious, the next 'set' of books that I would recommend getting after them, is 'The Tarbell Course In Magic'. That's a good start to any magic library, in my book

Hiya and welcome to TM,

Gary's book suggestions are good ones, the only other one I'd add to that is Mark Wilson's Complete Course.

Have fun :D

Welcome, Jason. :)

I agree with Gary's book recommendations above, although I'd probably go with the Lady of Mystery's Mark Wilson's book suggestion before going the Tarbell route (purely for financial reasons).

Hey thanks a lot for the starting recommendations guys. Is there anywhere specific that would be the best place to search for those at, or just look them up online?

Modern Coin Magic
RRTCM
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic

are all available through Amazon, and likely other book retailers as well.

Tarbell's Course in Magic you can find offered by several Magic retailers. I forget which ones, but Madhatter International comes to mind.

Fair comments. Tarbell's course is very costly. Mark Wilson's is a veritable replacement. Good point there.

Welcome.
You should also check your local T.M meet I found it really helpful just having people interested in the same this as me to talk too.
