I picked up the idea from a video of a conversation with Dai Vernon. I had been toying with using a short card for a while because you can use it as a key card and still riffle shuffle, however I kept missing it in practise and had to tap the deck before locating it. Dai Vernon made the same point in his video adding that he would use a moon cut card to fool magicians - even letting them riffle shuffle the deck themselves and he'd still find the chosen card. After that I was sold and now I always carry one even though I don't do a key card routine.
