There's also: "Magic: The Complete Course" by Joshua Jay. This one strikes me as an updated (albeit not as in-depth), almost spritual successor to Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic; with all due respect to that much-revered tome.

If I really feel like punishing all of you, I just might review it.

Mac King's Big Book of Magic is also very good for beginners. It comes complete with everything you need to perform the effects explained.

I love Mac King's books. I reviewed that one. It's not a very good review but it's there.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

It's funny you should mention that (http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Complete-Co ... 0761149872). I was just having a look at it last night and my first thought was how nicely it fit in as a precursor (as an introductory for a beginner) to MWCC.

It has some really good classic effects, a few contemporary ones, plenty of crediting to the appropriate originators, a nice overview on historical matters and minibios of famous magi.

A really great looking book - even comes with a DVD to help practice timing and misdirection.

At first glance it was an extremely well produced book with lots of pictures to help the student along.

Yeah, that was the impression I got of it as well right off the bat. And via Amazon it's even cheaper. That's a damn good deal if even half the tricks are usuable. :D

After reading this thread I quickly succumbed and bought the Joshua Jay book (I'll review it properly soon...ish, if someone else doesn't beat me to it). Have to say I was mightily impressed. It's a quality book, and visually it's top notch.... loads of photos (and of course the dvd is the icing on the cake). This would make a great xmas pressie for the aspiring magician in your life.. especially if you bundled a few of the g****cks used in some of the tricks.

Lady of Mystery pointed me in the direction of Karl Fulves books a while ago, I must say that I was very impressed with them. They're packed full of great information and if you shop around you can pick them up for a couple of pounds each.

That Picture your self as a magician looks like an awesome book. I have a book called "A Book of Magic for Young Magicians: The Secrets of Alkazar"

It is a very helpful book I have re read this book several times it really helped me understand how to be more of a performer and how to make the trick more interesting. It's just over a fiver so it's worth a buy. It isn't a long book but it's still very useful.
