Always On

Postby Grimshaw » Nov 20th, '08, 14:01

Since I'm asking questions of you lot, can i ask if anyone grows weary of being ' Always on '? That is, sometimes i walk into my local, they know i do magic, and it feels like im expected to have something new and spectacular to show them, every time i go in.

Some nights i just want a quiet drink you know? So if im grumpy and say No they seem disappointed, so i feel bad, and night out ruined.

I carry a deck around all the time, but do any of you go further and are armed with gimmicks when you go shopping? Just in case?

i used to be always on. But I cant be arsed anymore.

If anybody wats to see something and im not in the mood, ill say " Ill show you something next time" and then never go back again.

or Ill go with something the next time, and their not there.

why not make it into a running joke instead?

everytime they ask to see something, put a deck on the bar top and say in a over the top silly hacked off kinda way "oooh...go on then....we'll see...we'll see...name any card..."

they do, you raise an eyebrow, order your drink - and then show them that the only card thats in the deck thats reversed, is the one they just named..

say nothing, put the cards away, and take your drink and sit down...

I think in my case they tend to ask me not to perform.

That said, being 'always on' hasn't been an issue. I guess if someone were to start bothering me to perform I'd say something like "give me 100 bucks and I'll make it disappear." ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I just very politly tell them that I'm really not up to performing tonight but I'll get you next time. Most people understand.

I usually just say, 'oh sorry, I haven't got anything on me today'. That works quite well and most of my friends are my magic gunea pigs anyway so they're usually quite glad of a magic free night :D

I always go out with 4 or 5 pockets full off effects and a straight deck. If I'm asked in my local pubs I always do something. Always. That's my job, I entertain. I don't ever say no.

Oh yes! Sometimes I feel the same way! :-D

People often want to see effects, but it's always good to remember to not perform too much. Other wise it takes away from the effect of the performances.

I always tell them I'm planning to do something really cool, and that maybe they'll get to see it later some time! :)

I know this all too well but I have to be honest... it really doesnt bother me!! I walk into a bar on a friday/ saturday night and first thing I hear is "Its Magic Mark!!!" I alway have a straight deck, a loop, and coinvexed and that pretty much keeps me going. I have an arrangement with 1 bar in Skipton where they are effectively my stooge and they help me do an amazing card to bottle.

I love it, I never say no.. well except if im on a date or something similar... which isnt very often nowadays I must admit!!

I knew someone who ysed to say
"Sure, why not - but first, what do you do for a job"?
A. I'm a bricklayer.
"Great, then build me a wall and I'll show you a trick"

Oviously this adapts to any response that you're likely to get.

I am ALWAYS on.... I'm in high school, it's pretty much standard for a magician in that environment to be "on" all the time". If I EVER left the house without at least one deck of cards, lord help me!

Why dont you just not take cards and coins with you? Saves lying.

My experience of being in school as amagician was completely different - classmates wernt interested but that suited me... I just wanted to get my GCSE results to be honest. If people did ask at school I would just simply say no.
