13 Steps was published in 1968, I believe.

If you have a copy with the white dust jacket, look just to the right of the the 'Q&A' temple step.

Turn the book 90 degrees anticlockwise.

See the two circles? Don't they look like eyes? Examine the face around them...

It's Homer Simpson!!

Okay... proper credit should be given to Ed Mishell for the illustration, but it's still freaky.

I'm sure Corinda put the idea of subliminal Simpsons in his head.

Darn! I wish I could remember where my copy is. Under the bed somewhere, I think.

Does anyone have a photo of this wonderful piece of artwork so we can all enjoy it?

Hmmm it looks like a cross between Homer and the Batman mask, with spectacles. In fact, there is a bat and a spider's web as well as Clark Kent / Superman's x ray eyes. It could, of course, be the case that we're looking too deeply at the book. It's a great DJ cover though.

Try this - although the definition may not be good enough to show Homer.

I fear that the discovery of such things proves that one has far too much time on their hands

Found it. It was indeed under the bed. WOW! Definitely Homer.

But, looking at Homer, there's another pair of Matt Groening eyeballs above him. Am I the only one to see Philip J Fry (from Futurama) -- or at least the top part of his face -- upside-down above the Homer face?

The problem with this sort of thing, like subliminal imagery, is that once you see it you'll never, ever be able to not see it.
