What to buy first?

Postby Manfonse » Mar 4th, '09, 17:36

Hi there, im pretty new to all this. I have Coin Unique by Eddie Gibbson and a few others such as bitten coin and the coin with the hole for putting cigs and bank notes through.
Now I have been browsing around some sites and i would like to buy the Gecko or the Dragon. Now I have never used anything like this beofre. What you reccomend for a new start?

Thanx!

To be perfectly honest, I'd save your money and get yourself a good book. You'll learn much more than any gimmick will give you.

Do you recommend any books in particular Miss Mystery?

She's right though, get Modern Coin Magic and Royal Road (or whatever the Lady suggests, no idea what that will be) and get practising. It will work out A LOT cheaper and provide you with a lot more knowledge.

Can I suggest you buy absolutely nothing at the moment?

Instead take a trip to our Review Sections and work through as many as possible to get an indication of the thoughts and opinions on the various items, that way you'll know which are hot and which are not. We've said it many times before but most of us have a Drawer of Shame where all the 'looked good at the time but when I opened the packet it was awful' items are thrown never to see the light of day again. Books are always a worthy investment and if someone doesn't mention Mark Wilson, Bobo, Karl Fulves, possibly Nic Einhorn at some point it will be unusual as they're very sound books to get. There are a lot of previous 'what to buy' threads so trawl the Forum a bit and see what advice has been given before - it won't have changed.

Best of luck!

Good advice given above but..................

1. Get a pen and paper
2. Click on the sponsors web sites that you find scattered around TM. Look for things that interest you in the beginner category. That includes books, DVD's as well as gimicks and tricks.
3. With your new list - come back to TM and check the review section. You'll find lots of great advice and that what it's for, to help people who can't make their mind up on how to spend their money.
4. Accept that you will still buy some c*** (not the best) stuff
5. Enjoy yourself while browsing.

Excellent advice Dave - cheers!

With that in mind, and all the other suggestions, perhaps we should now finally create that long overdue Sticky where all such nuggets can be posted and enquirers referred to? I'll start the ball rolling with the advice given above, if anyone would like to PM me with (sensible!) suggestions about what to include for newcomers and those just starting out, together with the links to the TM Review if there is one, I'll add them as and when I can.

How about including advice on how to approach your first paid performance? This also seems to be a regularly asked question.

OK, that'll be a separate sticky - again PMs suggesting posts/threads to include would be more than welcome.

I slipped into that trap of buying all the newest and groviest stuff out only to get it home, open it up and find that it was total pants. I'd dread to think how much monies worth of stuff either found its way onto ebay, ended up in the dustbin or is sat in a shoe box never to see the light of day again.

Books are always good and as has been said before, Mark Wilson, Bobo and Fulves are all great places to get started.

Hi Davey - keep it all and store it wherever you can

A day will surely come along when you buy something and think "that ??? I sold on ebay would have been a perfect partner for this".

Some things that are pants at the time or on their own can be made magical when combined with something else and you can't get hold of them again

Once it's bought and paid for then for the sake of a couple of quid on ebay I'd rather keep it.

I wonder if anyone else has sold something only to then regret it at a later date?
