What puts you off a trick?

Postby TheStoner » Mar 19th, '09, 21:49

While studying tricks, until recently, the word "faro" stopped me dead in my tracks and I'd quickly move on to the next one. Now that I can (nearly always) faro it's opened things up a lot, which is nice.

But I still hate the crimp! I know it's relatively easy and basic but I just don't like it. As soon as I see "crimp" in a method I move on - I know I probably shouldn't but I do.

I'm sure it can't just be me, so what word in a method puts you off a trick?

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Buying - anything (almost) that doesn't fit my persona.
Doing - anything that is beyond my ability (so far) or doesn't fit with my performance ethics (use of stooges, etc).

Simon Scott

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.

As far as moves that put me off go....the side steal.

As far as general things that put me off go...the "feel" of the moves, pacing, etc...a "would I feel comfortable with that?"

Self-working ACAAN. Spec holds and shuffles the deck - names any card - chooses a number between 1 and 52, counts to that number, turns it over and it's their card. All done in their hands. You just have to judge in advance what card they will chose (Ace of Spades - dur, Queen of Hearts - dur), give them an appropriate one-way force deck and hope for the best! This idea is copyright SUMP (Stoner Useless Magic Productions). Maybe Ellusionist would like to market it on a £20 DVD?

I do a spectator shuffled deck ACAAN. Never had it work though.

It changes by the day but today the thing that puts me off is two words;

SET

UP

Tomorrow it'll change to GIMMICK. The next day it may well change to SHUFFLE, depending on how lazy i feel.

Thing is and in all seriousnessesesses, the end result should be what we look at. The journey towards it should be worth it, regardless of the techniques employed. If it isn't, the trick isn't worth doing surely.
